DesktopX screwed my pc

OK. I got windowblinds a while back and love it. So I figured I'd give DesktopX a try. Everything worked great for a while, till I tried to run a scan with Norton. It wouldnt scan. So I try downloading a program from Norton to fix the problem and explorer freezes. So I do a little more searching, and discover it only freezes when I try downloading an activex control. Next, go to Microsofts site and discover a certain scripting exe must be damaged on my pc. Microsoft tells you just to download the exe and replace it. Only problem is that they require you to download an activex control first. AHHHHHHHHH!!! Don't you just love microsoft!
Nothing against Desktopx, it seemed to be a decent program (from the little time I used it). What causes this problem? I did some searching and its not an uncommon thing to happen. How can I prevent this from happening again if I get brave enough to try this program again. I don't want to spend another day reformatting my pc...

Norton panics at any sign of an ActiveX control....assuming all are evil.  It's actually the fault of Norton, not proggies like DesktopX.

If you wish, you can have MY year's subscription to Norton AV....a week after the last renewal Norton killed my BITS meaning NO Windows Updates, etc....not till a full re-install of SP2.

Anything that pathetic doesn't deserve a pulse, so Norton got the arse...and will never be on one of my machines again.

Norton as in NU used to be good....Symantic fubarred it, as is their wont.

lol, yes, I don't care for the norton nazi sometimes myself. But I will give it this though, it has caught a lot of stuff before it reached my pc. Have had friends infected by the same stuff that norton stopped on my pc (they where using other AV's). Yet, with all it's problems, I might switch after this subscription runs out. Norton wasnt affecting activex though, that damage was cause by one of the dx objects. I use firefox anyway, so activex gets little use on my pc other than when dealing with microsoft...
Found other threads here (I should search befor posting), with others having the same problems after using dx. Love the program, just wish I could get the nerve to use it again...

I used DesktopX and all the others for 2 years with Norton AV (2003) and Norton Personal Firewall (2003) - only issue I had was Norton screaming Malicious Script!!! Once I allowed Desktop Objects(widgets & gadgets included) to run, Norton calmed down. Then I tried to switch to NIS 2005 and my BITS went out the window. Switched to Trend Micro - no problems yet. It's not the objects, it's Norton's script blocking and active x control.
