Use the Catalyst removal tools from the ATi site to remove the drivers completely, and then reinstall the latest ones.

Xp likes to change some of my BIOS settings when doing a fresh install, don't know how...I would check to make sure your initial display is set properly, also. If you have an AGP card...set to AGP, PCI to PCI. I say XP changes my BIOS settings, I mean that when I do fresh install, the frquency setting on FSB is set back to default. Good luck with your ATI card.

Turn off 'Automatic VPU Recover' in Control Panel. If you don't get an MS error you should be fine.

I don't really think that's possible!

Control Panel/ System/ Advanced/ Startup and Recovery/ System Failure; un-check all except ' Write an Event to System log'. When it does it again, look in Administrative Tools/ Events and see what the error is.

oyi.....

What's the error??

hummmm.....that could be a hardware problem since it was doing it before the re-format. For the moment, let's get past that. Since you re-formatted, you can't roll back the driver. If you installed the newest driver, then un-install and re-install the original drivers. If you installed the originals, then update them to newest.

Almost forgot; download and install this: http://www.drivercleaner.net/ Do not run it. Un-install the ATI drivers and re-boot into Safe Mode. Run Driver Cleaner from there (just follow the directions). After it's done, re-boot into Windows and install ATI drivers.

First off, you get newest drivers here: https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27

Having said that, if you re-installed the original drivers it should have fixed it. Re-formatting and installing those drivers pretty much eliminates a software problem. If you re-installed off the computers OEM CD, then this can go unanswered; did you install the motherboard drivers before the graphics drivers?

What's happening with that error is your card shutting down hardware acceleration. The usual cause (excluding software) is the card overheating. Pop the side of the case (look, don't touch) and see if the card fan is running (if it has one) and leave the side off and see if the error occurs. Failing that, the next step is to re-seat the card and the memory sticks. The former I'm sure you can handle...with the latter ask if you don't know what to do.

No manual, ah?

OK....What's the make and model of your computer?

Don't see too many Alienware's with ATI's.......must be an X800. There's a phone number on the machine..call it. Alienware's support is excellent and you/us messing with it could prove costly for no good reason.

Hi Gamanade.

Your description leads me to think that there is a risk
that your hard drive may the culprit.

If the hard drive surface is damaged in one or more
places your system will glitch or just crash if system
files are put onto damaged sectors.

Most hard drive manufacturers have tools you can download
which will do a thorough check of their models, checking
for different types of errors that can appear.

Usually they also include tools that can fix errors if they
are found.

Do you know the make of your system hard drive?

If not here's how you find out:

1. Go to Start > right-click on "My Computer" and select Manage.

2. In the Computer Management window that pops up Click on the plus sign
before Storage in the left frame. Then click Disk Management.

3. In the right bottom frame there will be a row displaying the partitions
on "Disk 0" which is your primary drive. Right-click on the "Disk 0" title
square and select Properties.

4. In the new popup window you will see the model number of your hard drive
at the top of the General tab. Let me know what it says exactly.

Yes, that is the model number.

It tells us that it is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 SATA NCQ
http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/discsales/marketing/detail/1,1081,645,00.html

Let's go to their tools page. Be sure to use Internet Explorer since that
is the browser that will work with their Online tools;
http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/utils.html

We find a link to their "Diagnostic Software (SeaTools)".
Clicking that link takes us to a page describing three
different versions of that tool.
http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/

1. Under "SeaTools Online" > Select a language: select English

2. On the following page start with the "Drive Self Test (DST)",
when asked if you want to install the IE HD tool plugin click yes,
and after that test is done go through the "File System Check" and
"Generic Drive Tests" too.

3. Let me know if it reports any errors.

Good luck!
