Assaulting Enemy Planets

Hi Guys,
I just brought the game and started playing and i must say i love it, its all i have done since i downloaded it yesterday. I am however a little confused as to how you go about invading the enemy planets. I have just started a new game and the AI decieded to take on of the planets right inside more borders. "I can't tolerate this" i thought and so i sent two 1000 troop transports over to the planet to capture it, but my transports just sit there next to the planet. How do i get them to drop the troops so i can take it for my own?
P.S Sorry if this is a real noob question but i am still getting used to the game.
