system doesnt boot up

system doesnt boot up

win2k gone for good??

hi there.
well i downloaded bootskins from the net, and was exited to try it.
since the doc says, that it will work with win 2000, i was happy.

after installation, i checked all the possible skins etc pp...

everything was fine. so i chose a skin for my bootscreen.

BUT: when i restart my comp the skin appears, BUT my system doesnt start up.
i tried everything: running in safe mode, last known config, by dos prompt...

but nothing works.

so is my win2k f***** up for good, and i need a reinstall of all my software, or is there a way to deinstall this $%^#@#$

i'm on knoppix right now, but my devices are just ro, and i doubt it, that simple deletion of the dir would help...

so... suggestions??

My version of Vista is Home Premium

Bootskin stopped being supported back in 2004 - Bootskin does not work on Vista

you can always make a copy of vidstub for back up if you want - then delete the "\Windows\System32\Drivers\vidstub.sys"

it's been a while, but I believe all it does is tell XP not to use the default boot but to use the one directed by bootskin

Will Bootskin fail without it.

deleted it will make your system boot normally ( I think - not sure on Vista... since bootkin wasn't made for vista and doesn't work on Vista... )

Sorry Tom but I deleted your posts since we do not have to tollerate you swearing in 18pt font. If you have troubles with our supported software we would like to help you any way we can. However as Bichur has said Bootskin has not been developed in four years. It is unsupported and will not work on Vista. I'm sorry you are having troubles but your way of expressing them will not be tollerated in these forums. Please feel free to post again in a constructive mannor and the comunity or myself and other support memebers will help as best as the situation will allow.

I am actually using XP, and also having trouble with "VidStub.sys". However, In my situation, I am Getting a BSOD upon starting my machine.

Which within, it states,         "This Error was caused by VIDSTUB.sys. A Process tried to write to read-only memory".

I then am allowed to restart my machine. Only this time, it comes up to the Boot Selection screen. The sreen is like the one you open when you press F8. Only with fewer options. I then choose to, "Start with last-known good configuration". It then boots up as it should.

Once the Desktop is loaded, I now get a "Hardware Detected" window telling me my "SMBUS driver" needs to be installed for my Mobo. So i proceed to install it. Now everything works ok as long as i dont turn off my machine or have to reboot for whatever reason.

Of course, If i do turn it off or reboot, it takes me back to the beginning again with the "BSOD" stating the same thing. So following the procedure that i've mentioned above. I am left once again with my SMBus driver needing to be installed again,

I've tried to deal with this for about a month now. At first, i felt it wasnt a big deal. SMBus was a quick install. However, After a month of this, Its getting extremely annoying.

Hoping someones got some ideas... Im crossing my fingers... Thx

No this is not spam, but if any of you are having trouble deleting vidstub.sys because you can't boot in to Windows (XP or Vista), try a program like Norton Ghost or any other program that boots from a CD and allows you to browse the files on your HDD.  I suggested Norton Ghost because that's what I personally use, but I'm sure there are others which are probably better.  Hope this keeps some of you from reformatting just to get rid of one file.
