Jack Thompson Attempts to Have Penny-Arcade Arrested!

More Traffic hits than naked pics of Katie Holmes!

A follow-up to Amitty's article...

A few days ago I posted this bit regarding the start of an email exchange between anti-violent video game zealot Jack Thompson and the creators of Penny Arcade. Well Jack has escalated this by sending a very misleading letter to the Seatle PD trying to have the PA guys arrested (for god knows what).

I have taken the liberty of reproducing the letter PA posted since they are having server issues right now.

This sort of dissent quashing is what Jack and his ilk are all about. They don't give two shits about protecting squat. They just want power.

You can *try* to email Jack with your feelings on this if you like @ jackpeace@comcast.net but his email box is likely to be broken by now.

*Update : I see that this is also the biggest comment getter on Slashdot's front page right now as well.

I was bored at work today and had only two classes to teach, so I amused myself by reading up about this a bit on a few sites. Really funny stuff! I love how they pushed his buttons and sent in a check in his name - there's a scan of that on their site, too. The memo says something to the effect of "Donated in the name of Jack Thompson because Jack Thompson won't"

Pure comedy.

So let me get this straight... Jack-off Thompson decides to start a moral crusade for his own self-serving purposes. Penny Arcade calls his bluff and starts returning his BS with interest. Thompson tries to involve the police by playing the "cop-killer" card.

I just wish I had popcorn.

I just wish I had popcorn.

it is bound to get even more interesting really. PA has a great lawyer now after some hairy legal issues back in the day. This means they have the benefit of a guy who can tell them exactly what they can and can't do legally in public with 'ole Jack.

I think it would be insanely just if after the game company is found to not have incited violence, they sue the utter hell out of him for the damage he has caused their brand. Just my opinion, but I think he has done a lot more dancing in the grey areas of the law than the game companies.

If what he is saying is true, then "Whack-a-Mole" is a trainer for animal abuse. That, along with his points, are absurd, so when they fall through he'll have a ton of really heinous accusations that he leveled at the game manufacturers and retailers to deal with. If I were him I'd filch and save my $10k too, he's liable to need it.

It's ridiculous what's going on - there should be no way that Jack actually wins cos the man's a moron.

Hopefully he'll get locked up in a quiet room for a few months to relax a little.

As of around 3pm PDT yesterday, the Seattle PD hadn't received ANYTHING from Thompson. It looks like it was a media grab, since he DID send the fax to just about every major media outlet there is.

The man is a joke, plain and simple.

That's for sure.

Kudos to Gabe and Tyco for doing what the jerk couldn't/wouldn't (stand behind what he said). But that's fairly normal, from what I've been able to pick up about Mr. Thompson. All bluster, no brains. And no follow through.

Miserable, lonely jerk.

I dont much like the Vice City games either, but trying to blame a game for an idiots actions is dangerous in itself.

One of the problems with Jack is that while many people can see him for the idiot he is, he is still being called upon by CNN and other outlets as an expert in gaming violence. He is still spewing untruths about gaming and it's being released by news outlets as fact. While Penny Arcade has a wide readership, it's still just a gaming/online comic site and doesn't have the reach of a CNN. So, some people are in the dark as to Jacks ass-hattery. Hopefully, that will get fixed and quick.

I remember when this story came about and seriously I was peeved that people wanted to sue makers of GTA stating that it was training kids to kill. Good god, people have no life!

a few good articles on www.brokentoys.org (aka The Rantings of Lum the Mad redux, sans in-depth game criticisms.)

there should be no way that Jack actually wins

as stated on the forementioned site, there should be no way that this guy gets airtime. Period. Giving people like him any attention (namely the widely transmitted kind) is teh r00t of all 3v0l! It's not that he truely passes for normal or that millions of people will become phobic of gory videogames after listening to his rubbish, but that out of hundreds of couch potatoes that say 'uhh... guess so' before flipping the remote back to their regularly scheduled skin flick, 1 or 2 of them will stop and say 'damn right!' and form a small loyal following to what this quack preaches... all because he makes appearances on venues that at least have an ounce of credibility. And it's a loyal gathering that makes people like him, Jim Jones, Falwell, McCarthy, Stalin, the Spanish Inquisitiors, et al, extremely hard for the aphony majority to ignore.

So THAT'S why I can't stop torturing small animals! I knew there had to be a reason, because it's just not possible that I am a sick bastard all by myself!

Actually, I am pretty disgusted by GTA, or are you suggesting that it makes no statement at all?

Actually, there's a difference between being disgusted by GTA and spewing lies about games and the violence that may or may not be accessible (easily or not) contained in them. Jack goes overboard on this. If you look over some of these video game related sites, like Penny Arcade and Ctrl+Alt+Del, you'll see that they actually advocate much the same thing that Jack supposedly is trying to represent. That is, keeping violent video games out of the hands of children. They support game ratings. The difference is Jack doesn't think anyone should be allowed to purchase games like GTA, adult or child.

I would suggest that you haven't read the article.

Troll.

There's a really funny update over at PVPOnline. Apparently, after the Seattle Police Dept and FBI were unable to stop the villians at Penny Arcade, Jack moved on to the next logical step - The Justice League!
