Enemy ships with double or triple HP of mine

Curious if I'm missing something or if this isn't supposed to be happening. After I finally research weapons and can make my first attacking ship (shouldn't some type of weapon technology come standard to each race) all of my small ships have only 5 hp. The attacking fleets of enemy small ships have 10 and sometimes even 15 hp.

Am I missing a tech or something in ship design?

Perhaps the hull size :/ Also there are race bonuses such as War Party that will let you have more Hps.

The hull size for my ships and theirs is the same.

How can I tell what race bonuses I'm up against? Although it seems like double or triple the HP is a little extreme for a bonus. And I also noticed that sometimes the race would have some ships with 5 and some with 10HP or some with 10 or 15 HP so I'm not sure how a race bonus would work for that.

Maybe it's time for a reinstall.

Hmm it could be a bonus from expeirence. I Noticed when my ships won battles their defensive values went up, but I didnt check out their Hp.
