Explanation of "Handles"

I seem to remember reading on this site awhile ago that we should try & keep the number of handles that we run under 14,000. Is my memory correct? Beyond that, what are "handles" anyway? As well, one of the things that causes me concern is that when I first turn on my computer and boot up (the only progs. that I boot up with are Bootskin, Logonstudio, Microsoft Anti-spyware, Trend Micro Anti-virus, Zone Alarm, Intel Pro-Set Wifi, & Windowblidns) I find myself apparently with 47 processes (as stated by the Windows Task Manager). Is there any way to bring that number down? One other question: it seems to me that once the number of handles increases, the only way to bring it back down is to reboot the computer. Is this true? Is there any other way to bring it down?

To modify your services choose Run from the Start Menu and type "services.msc" hit enter. Try this website for an explanation of the different services Link I can't help you on the handles item. I remember several years back that 2,000 was the number. I think it just depends on the computer. I just checked and I'm running 6,880 as I write this and I have quite a bit more running than what you listed, however I only have 36 processes listed.
If your using windowblinds you want to disable the service "themes" for sure. Since you use Zone Alarm you can disable the Security Center and the Firewall as well. I recommend you first write down or screen copy your current setup in case something stops working.
