Just purchased Object Desktop - Very upset.

I just purchased Object Desktop. When I received the order confirmation, it contained a download link for Stardock Central. That is not what I ordered and I don't want to install this so that I can use the software I purchased. I didn't agree to this prior to purchase and I won't do it. I want the software I paid for.

Where can I download Object Desktop?

That's how you get the software you paid for. Stardock Central makes it easy for you to download/install that software and keep it updated. It's a good thing.

Install Stardock Central...this is a download client for all your software for Object Desktop. By using this you can not only download all your ObjectDesktop software, you can see beta version of updates...archive other versions that you can have to reinstall should a newer version have a bug and cause problems (it happens with all software). And this only scratches the surface of what Stardock Central has to offer. There is also a chat client you can go to and get answers to questions you may have from current users of the software and can in most cases solve your problems...even if it has nothing to do with ObjectDesktop software.

SDC is the program you use to install and keep all the different Object Desktop programs current and up to date. It is essential. It IS part of Object Desktop just like Windowblinds and Iconpackager. It is where you enter your registration numbers so that you CAN download the programs.
I suggest you do a quick read of this tutorial Link

Guess I type slow.
Do check the tutorial it has pictures.

I don't want Stardock Central on my computer. I want the software I paid for. If this were stated up front, I wouldn't have bought the software. If this is my only choice then I will have my credit card company dispute the charges. Right now, I don't want anything to do with Stardock.

Install SDC and click tools-->register products .. select Object Desktop and put/paste the email address against which you have purchased ODNT and put the serial number as well then click register ... in blink you will get all ODNT software available for download ..

I did not want to use it either. I paid and then found out they wanted a program with a registry entry on my pc first. Not the most forthright company despite their intentions.
I did load it and used it to download my software then immediatly uninstalled it and deleted all trace from my registry.

bidgevo8, I was mistakenly confused and apprehensive at first....it all seemed far more complicated and intrusive than I what had signed up for, but my unfounded fears were allayed when I bit the bullet and installed SDC. It is the hub of ObjectDesktop and provides links to all Stardock products, services and updates, not to mention the skins at WC, via the inbuilt browser.

I've never regretted installing SDC, and I'm sure you'll find it a most useful tool when installed

Granted SDC has it's quirks from time-to-time, but this is extreme!

~I don't understand why people get upset about SDC . I only run it once a week to check for updates. Which I choose to take or not. It also will archive versions for you in case there is a problem. Believe me..its not like its a "mind control" device...it just makes things easier for you.

Where can I download Object Desktop?

You download your Object Desktop purchase, together with all its components and/or updates for the coming year of subscription via SDC.

Stardock Central is a straight-forward integration tool to simplify what 'can' be a confusing process, particularly for those who may be 'new' to the whole world of Desktop 'modification' available through Stardock's wide selection of available programs.

SDC is pivotal to the enjoyment and on-going benefits of Object Desktop.....and no, I am not a Stardock Employee, and actually currently only have 4 of their programs installed......one of which is SDC....

I appreciate all of the input. I have been developing software for over 10 years. I understand the role that SDC plays. Personally, I don't find the process of downloading and installing software and managing component versions confusing at all. I just, very simply, want the software I bought.

It was not stated up front and that bothers me more than anything. I didn't choose to buy into the software nanny and if I had a choice up front, I wouldn't have given them my $49.

People freaking out because of a registry entry. It's not spyware, get over it.

Not freaking out. I simply don't want it. It was not stated up front that I would be required to install a download/license nanny to be able to even access the software I purchased. There isn't anything to get over. I don't want SDC, I want the software I bought. It's pretty simple.

SDC is also how you get the latest updates to each of the apps. You DONT ave to run it 24/7, and it isnt "spyware so cant understand the beef but if you really just wanted the files why didnt you grab the "CD" option nd just at for it to arrive?

If there had been disclosure right up front, I might have. When I chose to download the software, it was assumed that it worked like other software purchase/downloads because there was nothing stated that would lead me to believe differently. So, it is apparent that this is the only way to get the software and most don't have a problem with it. Thanks to those who have honestly tried to be helpful.

AH, gotta love it.. All the spyware virus and malware creators have apparently won the battle.. There are far too many people who simply don't understand how their computers work yet they feel the need to come spew their paranoia all over public places because a piece of software put... ohhh gasp.. a registry entry on their computer... Ohhh noes!!!

teisco, you do realize that almost EVERY piece of software you install on your computer puts entries in the registry, right? Do you delete all of those and then go ranting on the companies user boards about it? Have you started a grass roots effort to stop the silly use of the registry? Heck, maybe if you get enough people on board we can go back to using ini and config files, man those were the days!! Bah!! Sorry for the rant everyone but this whole the world is responsible for my stupidity mentality that seems to be taking over is really getting annoying..

OK, guys....I'm assuming these 'concerns' are due to a lack of familiarity with what the SDC program is, and does.  It's not necessarily a tirade from the vehemently neurotic so it's probably better to allay people's concerns rather than suggest they be fitted with reflective headgear.

Help is preferable to humiliation....

I started coding in 1982. I have developed software protection and license schemes for Windows beginning with Windows 3.1, through all the 32bit iterations up to XP. I am VERY familiar with the Windows system and registry.

I am not paranoid. I am not a newb. I am not stupid.

I simply do not want to install a download nanny/license nazi on my computer. That is my choice. There was nothing express or implied at the time of purchase that would lead me to believe that I would not have direct access to the software I purchased. That is my beef.

Help is exactly what would have been offered if perhaps the OP had decided to come here and present his concerns/worries in an adult manner. If he wanted to go off on a tirade he should have kept to private channels.. I guess I can call off the hounds for now...

Me too....... I love my SDC.   Please don't worry about using it, it really is harmless.  (And you are right Jafo, the arrogance in this thread is astounding.)

Excuse me but I know exactly how my computer works. I just put together a new rig and trying to keep it clean for awhile at least. Of course most programs install a registry entry, programs that I want to use. Thats the problem. I paid up front without any knowledge of the requirment to download a program just to buy something. So it is my computer remember? So I can install what I want on my computer, right? So I did not want to install any installers or downloaders so I removed Stardock after using. My preference.

If I want more items from Stardock I can install it again, correct? So what is the exact thorn you sat on? What is it that frightens you about my indenpendence?

Calling someone strange or odd because they run a tighter ship than you is childish. Or maybe I am wrong, maybe you all are 12.

Thanks...

Citizen teisco ...No-one here is 12.  The average age on this forum is probably the wrong side of 30....  There really IS no need to be 'running a tighter ship' with regards to the Stardock Central program.  In fact its repeated install and removal could pose potentially bigger issues...if, for example you were to be merrily editing your registry to expunge all traces...and had a brown-out just as you were writing to a hive...

SDC is a tiny proggy which can be set to run ONLY if and when you want it to....and poses Zero potential harm to your system's security...
