IE6 gets tabbed browsing - well kind of

Users of Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser will not have to wait until IE7 to experience tabbed browsing. MSN has shipped a new build of its MSN Search Toolbar that adds basic tabbed browsing support to IE6. But the feature is not fully integrated into the browser, instead relying on the toolbar to create tabs.

Tabbed browsing capabilities first appeared in beta releases of the MSN Search Toolbar, but were stricken from the final 2.0 build that was released last month.

Interesting - but I really don't like tabbed browsing. I guess I'll keep my IE6 the way it is.

I agree with kona. I'll continue using IE, but I'll likely disable the tabbed browsing.

As soon as I read the thread title, I knew I'd find a comment from you saying how you don't like tabs.......... Don't use them. There's really no need to tell us everytime someone mentions it.

This is typical of Microsoft. Rather than just giving you what you want. ie Tabs, they throw in a load of other junk as well. I Think I'll be staying with Firefox.

I'm not starting anything here, I'm truly curious. I use tabs in Firefox and I think they are an excellent idea. I can have one window open, but have several web pages going at the same time. So my question is: Why, specifically don't you like tabs in your browser?

Indeed clwoods, I can completely agree with you about that (not everyone likes peanut butter and banana sandwiches either ). I was just wondering what the specific reasons for not liking tabs are.

The 'simple' part does stand out quite a bit at the moment .I just hope they'll improve it soon - Firefox, at the moment (at least), kicks its ass with tabbed browsing.

Probably because MS hasn't made a significant update to IE in quite some time. As was mentioned in the original post, this isn't really adding Tabbed browsing to IE, it's more like a hack to add a feature that lots of people probably want until MS is able to get IE7 out the door. Myself, I doubt IE7 will be able to quench my tabbed browsing needs as I have found everything I need in FF with Tabbed Browsing Extensions..

Umm, they still don't have to. FF does happen to be free and freely available.

Besides, I don't think I would trust a rushed and retro-fitted "extension" to add tabbed browsing to an already unreliable browser.

It's absolute crap. In addition to tabs, the bar add-on pushes search and other crud that I certainly don't want or need.

It's crap compared to other tabbed browsers, but if you're one of these people who just absolutely has to use IE, or if you have a program that loads IE, it's better than nothing.

You can get rid of most of the default long toolbar, and then move what's left elsewhere, so it doesn't take up an entire row. I have mine set up where the menubar, buttons, toolbars, etc. only takes up one row. And then the tabs take up a second row.

Judging from the IE7 development blog, I think that will be much, much better. And I think it's supposed to go into beta this summer sometime.
