Skinner Weaksid ...by rights, the dictionary entries should be combined...the only distinction is the 'language' source.

Giving the impression they might be different is not at all clever for a dictionary...

13/15 Hmm it was always easy for me to find if words was misspelled or not, it's just that I suck on remembering proper spelling of words. IeSpell helps me a lot on that dept.

12/15 but I'm not a 'scribe'.

...well ain't that something, scribe meaning I could spell words. All this time I thought scribe meant I scribe to this here site or that scribe was one of those folks who does the abstract crayola scribblin' pictures which I'm mighty fond of. Guessin' I'd better brush up on my three R's

spellin can't matter that much, i mean its sole purpose is to communicate a message thru writing only. so chekc this:

"Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe."

as long as others know what ur saying - it doesn't really matter.

Royal Ass, that's a good one. I was able to read it without trying to figure out any of the words. That was interesting.

I have been preaching that for YEARS!..LoL..Thank you Royal! (you'll forgive me if I refrain from calling you by your full "nick"?..LoL)

I get soooooo tired of all these "punctuation" and "spelling" hounds that feel it's their duty to correct every slight mistake of every living soul..
I have dealt with many of them, being a former *Text based role player*.. It's funny because I have witnessed some very imaginative people writing "in character" fantastic short stories, that have kept me coming back for more..Their spelling was horrid, and punctuation was totally out the window, but I had no trouble understanding their writings and could not wait to read more!
Im glad that they werent put off by people who think it's their duty to teach the world the proper way to write words, it would have been a shame and a loss of some very good talent in that form of entertainment.

Sombody actually "gets it..LoL

::laughs:: Perhaps, but honestly..

I imagine that you do it more for humor reasons than simply to be anal as those are that I have dealt with in the past, I can accept that. Aside from the fact that you have been doing it long before I showed up here.
The people that I was referring to had such an attitude towards those less educated that they simply ignored them and would not interact on any level, which is (as a friend of mine puts it) kind of "snertly" LoL.

I dont know, I could be wrong Jafo, you could really take it seriously!.. but I doubt it, just from the time or two that you set me in the right direction, not to mention your latest thread..
Im thinking most definitely *Humor...::laughs::

Chicken?? Fried, grilled, baked, rotisseried, stuffed, it's all good!.

Well, Double Zero, I have to disagree. When writting, your spelling is often by what people judge you. As much as when in person, you comb your hair and make sure you make a good impression physically, when you write you should also make sure you "look good" by spelling right. Sure what you say is important, just as it is in person. But both in writting or in person, the first impression is always critical.

well, i got 9/15. i thought i was better than that, no wonder i get 13 less marks on english projects than i thought i would get (okok, its less than a 13 point reduction, but you know what i mean)

Fair enough Pax, I do not mind that you disagree with me as I do with you.

I consider it simply a form of communication, as I do not write professionally and never claimed to do so. If we were all in an enviroment where it mattered then I would most certainly agree, but we are not.
We are all in our unique corners of the world and communicating the best we can with one another, some can hardly speak english but they try with all their heart to do so. Others, from different parts of the world can speak and write very well but due to their customs, way of life, beliefs or whatever reason it is very hard to understand what they mean or how they mean it even though everything is spelled and punctuated perfectly.

I do not see a Man or Woman at "Face Value" For example how s/he looks, spells, talks, walks..to do so would be very "shallow" I try to look deeper into the person and try to get a feel for the Human, not the Humans "skills"..
A monkey can be taught to spell using blocks..LoL..does that make an impression on me?, sure..smart monkey..LoL, but that isnt all there is to that monkey now is there?

Spelling is superficial, as would be how someone is dressed, how they wear their hair or anything else, and is only whats on the surface...
Go beyond the surface Pax, you may see more worth in people than you ever thought possible.

Zero.

Spelling and grammar are fairly important, particularly in text-only communication/s where even the 'right' choice of emoticon can distinguish [or is all we have to distinguish] between a 'gentle suggestion', mirth, or downright 'snide' remark.  Reading Facial expressions isn't an option.

It's a lot like those pan-dimensional beings in Hitchhikers' Guide to The Galaxy....where all we saw was a white mouse.

People can be [are] judged [rightly or wrongly] by their skills of communication, even by how 'lazy' or disdainful they can be by treating their audience shabbily [contemptuously?].

I always figured if I wanted someone to treat my communication with respect by reading it I'd make darn sure it was clear and concise [and as correct as possible]....it's only fair that the orator respects his/her audience.

Affectations of communication....'1337 - speak', abreviations...ROFLMAO ...that may confuse, even typing in all caps, [or just every first letter [hint]] are disrespectful of the audience, or can be, as they presume prior knowledge/understanding, or attempt to categorize your audience as equally socially inept.

It's bad enough that our 'industry/hobby' is littered with jargon that confuses the newbie, without wanton deterioration of communicative language skills as well.

If/when a communication is seriously problematic then it will likely fail its purpose.

It is then a waste of typing, AND a waste of the audience's time reading....

Serious problem? Not especially.  Irksome? Usually...
