DX3 Crashes

No answers

DX3 worked OK for a week and now crashes. Themes, widgets and objects do not load without crashing. Stardock advised uninstall, reinstall and reboot - still not working. All skins deleted in the the reinstall. A pity - I enjoyed the product. Any suggestions welcome

Your cache files may have become corrupted and not removed by uninstall.
A typical location for cache files:
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Stardock\DesktopX
Delete this folder, or the entire Stardock folder here.

This is just a suggestion, but I hope it helps.

Thanks Rabidrobot, that does not seem to be the problem. Thanks to Xjennx. I am using Norton Systemworks 2004. I have had it recognise DX script before as malicious but as you say once allowed it is fine. I think Norton is having problems on my system as I cannot get to the script blocking to configure. I will look at it further as I think it is probably the right track. Anyone else have Norton problems? You are right about DX. So many good uses.

Don't have Norton Systemworks, but Norton AntiVirus 2004 and it hasn't caused any trubble. Don't think I even had to configure it to allow DX scripts. (I might be wrong, it's a while since it was set up.)

I use to before I got rid of it and got Zone Alarm Pro. Norton is horrible.

Stardock has an uninstall program that will do a complete uninstall on their programs, just download it and then run it . It worked once for me on an older version of desktopx. Try it and see if that helps. Good luck

I've had the same problem for years on a Win2K and XPhome platforms, has made development impossible for me This has been without virus software, or with McAffee's.

I had similiar problem... I reformatted mt HD and re-installed windows twice. The second time, I didn't re-install Norton AV and the problem seems to have gone away. I re-installed Norton Systemworks 2004 without the AV program.

So far, so good. I haven't re-installed SP-2 yet though, will let you know how that works out.Link

I am back in the land of the living. I got a link to the Stardock uninstall zapper and took out DX3. Appeared to to the completer job. Reninstall, reboot and now some instability in a few widgets but my Tiggz favourites appear OK. Keep you posted. Thanks for your help.

I have a similar problem. I am getting "dxwidget.exe has encountered a problem" etc. every time I try to launch dx3. I just bought the product about a week ago, and it worked great at first. Any thoughts? Deleting the desktop X cache directory didn't work.

Thanks,

Actmeister

A common cause of crashes in DesktopX is that the Windows scripting host has been damaged.

You can download this from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c717d943-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en

Many crashes in dx and it's widgets happen because the script plugin can't
connect to the host. This seems to happen most often with PC's that have
antivirus that hooks into checking for malicious scripts. I have had it
happen a couple of times with Norton. Both times it was fixed by reinstalling
the scripting host.

THANK YOU! That worked perfectly. I had just dumped Norton because it was causing other problems, but clearly the damage had been done.

Thanks again,
