Alliances?

I've noticed that I'm only able to propose alliances with civilizations that practically worship my civilization. This is not a problem. What I don't seem to understand is that I can't even propose alliances with anyone else. Are you not even given the option of asking another civ for an alliance if the computer knows they won't accept the offer?

Exactly. It's their way of telling you you have to be Close before you can get an alliance. (You also need the Alliance tech for the option to appear.)

That doesn't mean they will always accept an alliance if you propose it - sometimes you have to throw in a tech or some cash to sweeten the deal.

Nothing like a bribe to get your way. Remember this though, an alliance is only really good if you are planning an alliance victory. Otherwise you will get dragged into what ever way that you allied AI gets involved in. I usually just get close and not worry about alliances until I want that alliance win.

I have a game now that I bribed a minor race to attack then drengin. I allowed them to soften up the Drengin, then I went in for the kill. I took over most of the Drengin planets, the Minor race started attacking me for no reason. I would make peace without a problem, but turn after turn he kept attacking. Finally, I gave them a 14 planet that I had converted to 16 (cheesy exploit I used by trading the 14 planet for techs with another minor after I made the PQ a 16) The minor then stopped attacking me. :)

Anyone ever have a minor get this aggressive after you bribe them like I did?

The only thing that I can think of was that you inadvertantly killed one of their ships.

A minor will typically not start a war with the human player.

In fact I do not know if I have ever seen a minor start a war with me.

Nope, I did not do anything to them. This kept going on for about 10 turns, once I gave them the orange world with a 17 PQ (was 14) they no longer attacked me. They just kept about 25 ships next to the last world they attacked. :) Now I think maybe I found an oddball bug. :notsure:

Most of the AI will stop and leave their ships alone when peace is declared. Does not matter where the ships are. This always seemed a bit silly to me.

NewfyScotian, I wondered about that. I agree real silly to me as well. I am hoping that some of these stupid things the AI does now in the game will be cleaned up with Galciv II.

Btw You happen to know a guy by the online name of Kingpin? He is from Canada.. Just curious.. He is not playing Galciv though just Civ3. Probably a silly question I guess. :p

Silly or are they positionning ships to be able to counter-attack effectively if a new war erupts? Human player can be so treacherous when dealing with AI :).

Well there is that, but I would like to have the ability to demand that they remove there ships from my space.

Yes I agree with you there. An expanded diplomacy options would be nice. One would be remove your ships from my designated territory. Or something to that affect. :)

I am looking forward to the first Beta releases of Galciv II. I am hoping they will add the things missing in the current game design.
