Faster start up?

I sent my new computer back because I was having to many problems with it. In the meantime while I'm waiting for another one I hooked my old one back up. I ran this thing called eraser on it (because I didn't think I was going to use it again) and for some reason it starts real slow. It didn't use to. So I tried all the regular things like defragment, disc cleanup, error check, msconfig, and it still starts slow. Is there anything else I can try or am I just out of luck?

Im thinking that you just got used to your new PC and now the old one just seems like it take *Forever to boot..::laughs::
it happens..
Have you checked to see if your system is still set to Boot Defrag? Most systems do it by default but your settings may have been changed in the reg.
To check and adjust if necessary do this:
At the run command type Regedit
Then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction

If the *Enable string Value isnt set to Y then Edit it with Y
Exit the editor, reboot

That should do it

Hope that helps,
Zero.

Ok, then you may try shutting down some of your start up programs (Clear out your Start up folder) Delete away, they are just shortcuts..

Shut down unnecessary services, hers a link to a great site that will tell you what each service does and how to shut them down..
My only suggestion when doing this is, Shut them down 1 at a time, that way if there is a problem you will be able to easily fix it http://www.blackviper.com/index.html
Black Viper's Web Site..

Try those ideas and see if it helps..

Keep in mind it may not be very wise to mess with the registry...

kona0197 shakes his head at Zero...

Do you have to get yourself involved in EVERY thread??

Richard, if Black Vipers page is a little confusing to follow here is another link http://www.tweakxp.com/article21431.aspx ,It's a little easier..at least I think so.

Kona, I hate to say it but you are bordering upon harrassment,
I am a member of this site, like it or not. One of the basic member benefits is the ability to post/comment/discuss things upon these message boards. Thats a *Basic* Non Subscriber members benefit.

I'll take this one step further and inform you that not only am I a citizen of WC, but I am also a *Subscriber* and I support this site with my subscription as they have asked me to do, and I shall renew when the time comes to do so.
My involvement in these threads is simply to offer any help or suggestions that I can. The reg edit that I have clearly left instructions for is harmless, I have seen alot of other more advanced suggestions made here and the authors have not taken any heat for them, so why am I?

At any rate, in the event you never have read them, here is the very first paragraph of the rules, try to learn to live by them.

Thanks,
Zero.

Looks Like Kona Has a New Fixation, Yikes!
Richard, You Might Want To Try A Program Called Startup Control Panel To Organize Your Different Startup Apps. It Monitors Startup User, Startup Common, HKLM/Run, HKCU/Run And Run Once. You Can Get It HereLink

Good Luck.

DZ: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml - thats the correct URL

Kona: back off! Any member can post on threads as much as he/she likes and as long as its valid posts no actions should be taken.
But IF someone steps out of line just let the management (admins/wizops) handle it.

Double Zero, Start Up Control Panel is at www.mlin.net ( http://www.mlin.net ).

As a computer consultant, I have used it for years, and it is indeed, a good program for monitoring those startup items. Hijack This is better at it, but it is akin to a surgeon's scalpel - only useful in the hand of a surgeon (or at least someone taking directions from that surgeon.)

Zero - I have read the rules many times as I have been a member of this site for a few years. But I believe Jafo pointed out in another thread that you don't have to post in every thread.

WOWFactor - Don't think for a second that others besides myself find your lack of the ability to type correctly annoying.

Personally I find your jibes at others more annoying. Don't see what they have to do with the subject of the thread. And I'm sure that WOWFactor will be pleased to here that no-one besides you finds his/her typing annoying.

Thanks Snoman and Byron, I had the link correct, at least it works when I clik on it? but anyway, it does look like a cool little program!
Thanks.

Then I would point out Kona, that Jafo and I are the ones to discuss that..you have absolutely nothing to do with what is said between Jafo and I..also..I believe Jafo himself has demonstrated that he has the ability to speak for himself..Quite well actually..Please leave his words for him to speak...

Hope It Was Helpful, It's Been a Bless For Me.

Well, actually, I find both Wowfactor's typing and Kona's disparaging comments annoying...
But then again, I can be easily annoyed sometimes.

I had some talks with some of the Admins and I realize I was being very chilish. It is not my place to tell others how to act on the boards.

So:

Zero: I would like to apoligize for jumping on you about your posting on the boards. You have every right to post what you wish and where you wish. I realize I was out of line. I am very sorry.

WOWFactor: I would like to apoligize for posting about the way you type out you responses in every thread you respond to. It is not my job to tell others how to type. I am sorry.

I just want to get along with people. I will try harder to keep myself in line.

THESE TWO SHOULD GET MARRIED. After all... What was this about? A p+++ing contest or helping this guy figure out how to fix his system.

I guess I should apoligize for hijacking the thread as well. Sorry about that Richard.

I just want to get along with people. I will try harder to keep myself in line.

Actions speak louder than words.  Let's see if history repeats itself (again), OK?

People have the right to post on any thread that they want to.  The only people who have the right to intervene are: the original creator of the thread and the admins/moderators.  Otherwise, it's viewed as harassment.

If somebody annoys you, don't read what they write, and don't interact with them.  As in "real" life, not everyone will like each other, but that doesn't give anyone the right to start harassing each other.

Back on topic, were you able to get you PC working the way you wanted it to, Richard?

Im impressed, it takes an effort to apologize like that publically, I know, I have done it myself. I'll accept it Kona, thank you.
Hopefully from here on we will not have "this" to deal with any longer.
