...from having 6 cavities and one root canal done today. I insisted since half of my face was 'dead' that he might as well do the rest while 'in there'. Aside from a nice cup of tea [of three] and rinsing mouth with warm liquids, any good remedies to help that freeze, that seems to stay in place for a day, disappear more quickly?

I feel for you.  My daughter just had to have 3 teeth pulled today, plus a wisdom tooth removed and another tooth straightened.  She's pretty much incapacitated for the day and maybe tomorrow as well.

That feeling sucks...having half of your face numb. I've had 5/6 cavities filled in the past 3 weeks, gotta have 2 root canals (one on the 30th during spring break >_<) and then another cavity filled (right next to one of the root canals). I never really tried to get the numbness to go away...never thought about it actually. o_O Maybe try to massage your face or something? LOL

I've never had a root canal done before (have to go to a specialist) is it really that bad?

Root canal? I've had 3. I think the idea bothers me more than the actual procedure. They had to drill a hole in the top/BACK of the tooth, fill with an antiseptic then place a temporary 'plug' in there for a week. Upon return then remove the plug, wash it out, 'file' the inside of the tooth well [from the back, remember?] and give it a general good scrub/sometimes drilling. From there I think they just fill with [whatever] and close 'er up. The idea of these metal files, hooks, pins, drills running at a very high RPM *shudder* bothers me more. lol

Yeah what's with the weird metal pin thingie they put in there after they're done drilling to put in the filling? Hold the tooth in place or something? o_O I don't remember that with my other fillings (that was many years ago though). That contraption is scary. But after the root canal gotta get a crown put on. Not really sure what I'm in for but it's enough to freak me out...it sounds so awful and dooming. *low pain tolerance*

One time I counted seven "things" hanging out of my mouth, three of which were fingers from 3 different hands. My mouth is not that big.

As long as we're reliving dental stories I have one to add too. I was a sophomore in high school when I had my three wisdom teeth pulled. All three were F.B.I (Full Blown Impacted). Ick. I went in and they put me under to pull them.

For some reason, halfway through the operation, I woke up from the anesthesia. I was numbed up to the bejesus belt and still quite loopy. All I really remember was the doctor saying "He's waking up" and then the nurse stretching across my face to up the anesthetic. While she was leaning over me, I remember trying to tell her how much I loved her. Then I started cackling laughter. I was out about two seconds later.

That's a story I'm not too proud of, but it's still kinda funny.

A crown is nothing, really. [just expensive ] It's more or less a 'cap' that they place overtop a tooth, as a protector for the tooth. The bad ones are root canals [and other more major dental surgeries]. Since we're sharing these stories, here's one...

3~ years ago I had the FIRST HALF of a root canal done. They drilled a hole, filled with solution, plugged 'er up and told me to come back in a week. Well.. I moved 700 miles away just a few days later and couldn't get to SEE a dentist for well over a YEAR. The 'temporary' plug held just fine, but it got infected, again so I finally made it back for an appointment where they opened it [the tooth] up again, re-cleaned it and finished the root canal procedure. All went well for weeks, months, even up to a year. One day, aside from the pain I was feeling in that area [right in the front of my mouth, upper] I noticed a small "buldge" in the gumline above the tooth. hmm.. Wasn't sure what it was; didn't call a dentist. Weeks pass. One day, that buldge decided to grow to easily 500% it's original size and by that evening had 'burst' like a bad blister or pimple. I had to spit for several minutes as it was a blood/pus solution and quite 'bitter' tasting. In any case, it was gross.
I STILL didn't go to a dentist [stubborn, eh? ] More weeks pass of this 'thing' above my tooth bursting once every few days - filling up, bursting, repeat. And so on...
One day, probably months later I noticed the SAME buldge on the INSIDE of my mouth, BEHIND the tooth [in my soft palette]. When I 'pushed' it with my tongue, I felt pressure not only in the affected "root canal tooth" but that 'buldge' in the front of my mouth went out. If I pushed on the FRONT buldge, the back one went out - and so on. What was it?.. I had no idea but the very idea disturbed me so I went to the hospital [emergency] because the pain was ALSO close to totally unbearable. I was told that bacteria had 'eaten' from above that tooth, right thru the bone [and such] and into my soft palette. It was basically a hollow "tube" if you will, going from one end to the other, sealed on both eneds by a small amount of just flesh. It was so bad that EVEN IF I just 'touched' my face around my nose area I could feel immense pressure inside my mouth; in my little bacteria-filled tube. Gross.
I'm finally [after years] getting that looked after and by April 5th, it should be all fixed.

Yea, the moral IS to SEE YOUR DENTIST WHENEVER YOU CAN or SHOULD. lol.. furthermore, don't put going there off, under any circumstance like I did.. LOL

On the contrary Phazon. I brush my teeth [and floss] TOO regularily. I brush [easily] 8 to 10, sometimes 12 times a day. [OCD? lol] to the point where my gums have receded and as such, my gumline is more prone to bacteria. I also brush too "violently" I'm told.. ...
