JoeUser Feedback

Let us know about your experience on JoeUser.com

The development of JoeUser has been moving along nicely and there is still much more to do. But before we get too much further along I would like to here from some of you about your experience on JoeUser.com.

Mainly I want to here about problems you may have with the current design of the site. Whether they be bugs or design issues. At this point and time I'm not looking for Feature Requests so try to keep those at bay for now. I will post another article later asking about what features you would like to see.

So if you experience any problems or expect the site to work in a different way I would like to here your views and thoughts so we can make JoeUser a better place!

Obviously, I really like using JoeUser. The only thing I might like to see is the comments displayed in reverse. Right now, they display newest first and it makes it sort of difficult to follow discussions that occur within the comments. So the oldest first would be better, at least in my opinion.

Thanks for a great product!

This is a great site T-Man; you have done a great job formatting everything.

I agree with Theoden. I really would like it to view the posts in a thread in the order "oldest first" and "newest last". It makes reading the comments a lot easier.

Some people managed to get a large title in the blue top bar. How does that work? I cannot find a way to add or edit that.

It would be great to have a button or hyperlink (between "Home Page" and "Classic JoeUser"?) on top that links to the sub domain of the user. It looks to me that I have to type "my" domain to see my artciles. That would make navigating a lot easier.

You already know that I think this is a great site. Thanks. :-)

Hehe. I just saw that you already inplemented the order thingy. Sorry. :-)

Thanks a lot for this great site. I have one quick question: how does an article make it to the first page ? According to the points it got ?

hi!

i tried to edit my Unofficial FAQ. the blog post looks normal but when i looked in the box to edit the html, i noticed that a chunk of html that appears at the bottom is stuck in the top.

in the normal looking blog post the title, author appears, then the questions, with an mp3 question appearing near the end.

but in the --edit box-- the html looks like it starts off with a question about mp3 playing, then goes to the end, then the title and author info html, then it contines onward normally with questions until it gets cut off at the end where the mp3 question was.

i am nervous about editing my post now since i don't want it to look weird and being unable to fix it after i submit. i edited it a couple times before and did not notice this happening before.

you can see an example here: the first sentence has the front part cut off and the list starts at #4. the bottom shows #3 and the front of the sentence.

Thank you for kind words.  However I cannot take all the credit.
JoeUser has been a team effort.  So credit also goes to Brad, George and
JR.

Ok as far as some of the issues you mentioned below.

Comment Order: Done, matter of fact I think I had changed that
before  making this post.

Site Titles:  You can enter your own site title by going
your the Accounts page.  There is a section to edit your site.  Click
your site (most of you you will only have 1 site) and click Edit.  You can
add your site title  here.

Direct Site Links:  We will get that in.  It just
hasn't been high on the list though.  But keep bugging me about it so I
don't forget. :)

Featured Articles:  All articles shown on the home page
are Featured Articles.  This is a manualy process currently only done by
Brad. He selects articles that he feels will make for good discussion or
reading.

HTML Out of Order: Ok this should be fixed now.  The
articles are saved in 255 character length lines and I just had to specifiy the the correct
ordering to make it show up in order.

Good feedback so far.  Keep it coming!

Hi Pat,
site is looking good. I posted some suggestiond on the Galciv galatic council forum which I'll repost here. Some may already be done.

a) Improved from screen:
when I enter the joe user website I am presented with an overwhelming and slightly confusing screen. The top part, Joe user banner, links, local user info, channels and top stories are all fine. It's the rest that's confusing me. I always see a selection of your articles and really just a topic list would be enough (scrolling through pages of articles and images is painful). This is also true if I click on any channel. A topic list as the front screen would be preferable to a long list articles. In reality what I'd love to see would be a watch list (yes I can click on the spyglass), or a list of my personal favourite blog sites (not sure how to do this). A marker beside any of these updated since my last visit would be even better.

b) comment date and time:
while it's great to see a list of recent articles it would be very useful to also see a list of recent comments on articles. Take the top stories for example. As well as when they were posted, I'd like to know when the last comment was or how many comments there hav been

c) user update list:
I find over time that I like reading the comments of certain users as well as their articles. It would be nice if their was some method of choosing a favourite user and seeing which posts they have been commenting in so that you can go read their advice/ comments.

d) favourite user / site list:
as mentioned above this is what I miss most. I want to have a list on the front screen of my favourite users and sites. If it also displays whether new posts / comments are available on their sites then even better.

e) previous posts / views:
Amazon have this excellent ability to let you knwo what you were previously looking at. I keep spending lots of time looking around for the articles I posted in. yes I can use the watch list, but there is a big difference between articles I'm interested in watching and those that I just want to check if anything else interesting was posted a few days later. Adding articles to your watch list and deleting them later is a bit tedious. Anything I post to should be automatically added to a previous post list that I can click once on to see any further replies. Or better yet, with a further reply numbers or date beside it to save me clicking if nothing happened since my last visit.

f) Page Title: (What page am I on?)
when looking at any channel, it is very hard to tell which one you're on or whether you're on the top page or not. This is a lesser problem with users as the web address usually gives it away (and any title they use)

g) Return to top level: (how do I get back to where I was before I wrote a comment)
after writing a comment it's quite difficult to get back to your starting point again. A simple back to article list button would be nice.

Looking great,

Paul.

I think this was mentioned but I'll go ahead and remind you.

If I read an article on the front page, or by selecting it elsewhere, I cannot easily go to that persons 'blog site' without having to type it in so that I can read more of what they have to say.

I totally apologize if this is in fact possible but I just didn't see it.

Great suggestions and feedback! I'm sure we should be able to work some of those in. However I can't guarantee when I can get them in. Some of the littles I should be able to fit in the next week or so but some of the more complex items may have to wait a bit while we try and get in some of the other main features we have planned.

More feedback, keep it coming!

i thought there was an "add comment" part at the end of articles. i don't remember having to go to comments THEN going to the end to add a comment. am i remembering wrong?

also, when i add links, the "default My Favorites" doesn't work, it adds a new category with the url title for me even if i have a link in the url part. i had to add a "Links" category, then always choose that category before i add a link. otherwise no lnk would be added, but a new category.

There are a few article that one cannot access ... they start at AID=316 or something like that. When hitting on "comment", I get a "article does not exist" error. For instance, hit "politic", and select "comment" in the first article.

If you hit the article title (to go to its page), then the comments butten, then all is fine.

this url works:
http://brab.joeuser.com/articleComments.asp?AID=324

this does not:

seems blog articles now are starting with a "dd" for some reason.

thanks for fixing the out of order html.

Pat, I would like to see all articles of a user (including mine). Not just the first 5. When people are visiting someone's site they may be interested in older articles. If you (Patrick) write two more articles then this article (we are reading now) will be removed from your page and will be on some list and it will be hard to find. ;)

Found a bug: I have an article with quotes in the article description. See http://madice.joeuser.com/index.asp?AID=351 . Whenever I edit the article then anything starting at the quote will be deleted.

I think I found another bug. If it isn't then maybe I don't understand the concept. ;)

I have a link on WC to the following JoeUser article:
http://madice.joeuser.com/index.asp?AID=351

There seem to be some referrals from the following 2 links:
https://www.wincustomize.com/msgboard.asp?BID=WC&ID=19838
https://www.wincustomize.com/browser/msgboard.asp?id=198388&BoardID=WC&MaxReplies=10

I wonder why that first one is mentioned. It doesn't contain a link to my article at all.
Ah. I think I've found the referrals bug. It is eating the last character of the URL. So, in the case of WC and that first link the ID should be 198388 and not 19838...

But, what's up with that 3rd link that appeared. 2 characters eaten? ;)

Ooooh! I found another one. Not really safe to write about it here. I'll e-mail you. This is one you definitely want to fix ASAP. ;)

Another bug I have found:

Some threads are missing the "Click here to add a comment" link, although one can still make a comment by selecting the thread. Examples:
http://madice.joeuser.com/index.asp?AID=337
http://madice.joeuser.com/index.asp?AID=335

Hehe. Another small one.

If I create a thread with an external link then it does not allow me to remove that external link. ;)

HELP!!!

I made a Developer group
http://JTB-Developer.joeuser.com

and I can't make any article posts on my own group! LOL
Help me please, or is it that I don't understand the management of multiple blogs here.

Thank you!

Sorry for my lack of responses. I'm in the middle of migrating all our sites and database to new servers. I will have George and JR look at the issues you have posted. Keep them coming. Thanks!

hi everyone, great job on the bug reports, just so you know, the "(add a comment)" link only shows up if there are no comments currently posted to that thread. Once a comment is made, the link is gone and you do have to click on the "comments" link to post a comment.
