They're good for skinning app developers, as they're very popular, and it helps keep the apps popular and bring in customers. But from a skinners point of view, I think they're bad. Shows a lack of creativity, and in many of the cases, it's simply an example of someone seeing something popular and well liked, and deciding they want a piece of that action, so they can have everyone tell them how awesome they are and what a great skin they made, etc etc.
I do think they're good if, for example, you have a PC and you like the OSX look. I've never bought into the argument of 'if you like the Mac look, then just buy one'. That's the biggest load of rubbish I've ever heard. Average customisation software costs what, $20? A Mac costs about roughly bout 30 times that, plus not everyone wants to functions of another OS, just the looks.
Plus one of my main gripes with cross-OS porting is that there's not much distinction in it. How many ports look the exact same as all the others? Too many.

For me...OS ports is where it all started.  Litestep in particular enabled you to distance yourself from that tired old predictable taskbar and start menu that Win 9x and beyond thrust upon you.

Any alternate OS was ripe for adoption [in style]....and then there was even 'Calmira' to make Win 3x look like 9x and beyond.

For me, just replacing images on the default GUI with recoloured vers is unimaginative compared to adapting one OS to actually imitate another.

So what if the originality of image/concept is in question...when the creativity of the coding is unique?...

I also believe that ports are a good thing. When cleaned up properly they can really be beneficial to everybody in the community. Just my opinion.

Variety, The spice of life. Either a new visual style or a port of another OS, all adds to making Windows look and function differently and keeps life intresting!

LOL@cereb .......... use what ever you like....the whole point of OS customization is to make your pc look how you want ..so there is no WRONG way to customize your pc .. if you want to have it look like another OS ..so be it..cross OS ports are part of PC customization.. so they cant be bad ..(although some may not "look" as good as others)
