could someone please tell me how to open my start menu from the dock or if it is even possible.

Well, if you're using OD+ then it's as simple as ...

1. clicking in some blank space on the dock
2. click 'Add'
3. click New 'Start Menu' Entry

If you're looking for the full-blown start menu you can use this docklet by AndreasV: https://www.wincustomize.com/skins.asp?library=29&SkinID=2373 (although I didn't try this with the latest version of OD+).
