R.I.P. Christopher Reeve

Actor Christopher Reeve dies

Actor Christopher Reeve, star of the Superman films of the 1970s and 80s, has died.

The 52-year-old had been suffering from an infection as a result of a pressure wound and died on Sunday, his publicist Wesley Combs said.

He suffered a cardiac arrest at his New York home and slipped into a coma, Mr Combs added.

Reeve was paralysed nine years ago when he broke his neck after being thrown from a horse.

He later became an advocate for spinal cord injury research. In recent years, he had regained sensation in some parts of his body.

He had also returned to acting, appearing in a 1998 production of Rear Window, a modern version of the Alfred Hitchcock thriller about a man in a wheelchair who becomes convinced that a neighbour has been murdered.

The role won him a Screen Actors Guild award.

I personally will miss this fine example of a human being, who was an inspiration to so many with his courage and determination not to let anything get in the way of his living life to the full. A sad day indeed.

Black Xero, I hope you're very young, or you're gonna see a lot of "old" girls walk away.

She doesn't look that old to me. In fact, she looks quite young and lovely. (I might get myself into trouble for that comment, though.) Oh well.

He was over here in Oz, last year promoting stem-cell research.

When Australia made it compulsory for bicycle helmet wearing I always argued just how many more people die or are injured falling or being thrown from a horse, than on a bicycle, yet the laws did not encompass them.....makes you wonder.

'Tis sad he succumbed before research caught up with a 'cure'.

The loss of any individual is a tragedy, but at least he will be remembered for his spirit and compassion. It is sad, indeed....

Superman never made any money
For saving the world from Solomon Grundy
And sometimes I despair the world will never see
Another man like him

See you soon, Chris

It's not very often that I get misty-eyed over the death of a celebrity, but today was definitely one of those days. I'd always liked Christopher Reeve as an actor (besides Superman, Somewhere in Time is a particular favorite of mine), but I'd really grown to respect and admire him as a human being after his accident. He had such passion and commitment...that's why I was so shocked when I heard of his death this morning. It just didn't make sense.

Hopefully his loved ones and his foundation will carry on his work with as much spirit and determination as he had.

If anyone is interested in leaving condolence messages for the family and/or making any donations to the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, the URL is http://www.christopherreeve.org.

It was such a terrible freak accident when I heard that he fell off his horse and was paralyzed. And, at the height of his movie career too. Wow, isn't life sad sometimes. And now he's dead. What a tragedy. Rest in peace, Christopher.
