I have noticed that Window Blinds causes programs to open with about 3/4 inch space on the botton and the same amount cut off of the top. I switched to XP default to see the difference and all the windows maximize correctly. I have found the only way to solve this is to minimize a window and then maximize it again. This is rather a pain. This is something I just noice in the last few days. I also attached a new digital monitor. Because of that I try the XP and discovered the problem is not there with it. Are there settings, etc. I can change that will change this so that all my windows properly open up maximized. I sure could use some help like yesterday. Thanks so much.

If you just noticed this problem in the last few days, and you just attached a new monitor, maybe the monitor is causing it. Maybe there are new files associated with the system now too. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling windowblinds?

hmm-

Im going with a Drivers suggestion. You might want to make sure that you have up-to-date drivers.

I have tried uninstalling WB and this did not make a difference. I will check on the Drivers. This is a Samsung 173P with DVI connect. I did use the drivers from the disk but will check Samsung site. Why would the XP schemes be okay and not cause this problem, but installing the WB and using does? Anyone have any more suggestions or ideas? Thank for all your help. This is slowly driving me crazy.

Just downloaded the driver (which I believe was the same) NO change? This monitor is controled changed by software only. No controls on the unit other than power. All the adjustments, etc. are through a software program. This is a great monitor with bright, vivid colors with tons of great reviews. HELP.

Dual monitor, or still single?

This is a single monitor, but I believe you can connect between the analog and DVI and go back and forth via one or two clicks of the power button. I did just discover it IS one of the software programs. There are three included. Unfortunately, I do not see where I can prevent the software from starting, but I can exit it after startup. I will call Samsung to see if there is another way to disable the startup without causing video problems. I sure do appreicate the responses and help everyone is setting my way. I will keep it posted on the software situation. Thanks again, guys.

Yes, it might be a software issue with your new monitor. Did you have this isssue with your other monitor?

There might be one area in Skin Studio. I am thinking about the attributes, "MaxBorderCutTop" and "MaxBorderCutBottom". These are attributes in the Border section of SS. Good Luck.

If you hav'nt already tried, u might want to reinstall window blinds after u have unloaded them.

Do you have any other stuff running, like desktopX, that can reserve screenspace?

I called Samsung and they told me the "Magic Tune" software is not necessary, so I will uninstall this. They told me with a digital monitor all the adjusting is done through the video card. I purchased a new card for the DVI. I got a MSI NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700LE. Any idea how this is done??? The picture is near perfect. I noticed about 1/4 inch black area on the top of the screen and about 1/8" black on each side. I do have a number for MSI, so I will call also. I do not have desktop X running and I did not have this problem when I had the analog monitor. I will also check into the Skin Studio, but I am not very familiar with that program. I see if I can figure it out. Thanks again, guys!

you need to adjust the screen size using the buttons on the monitor.

NO buttons on the monitor, but the power! All is controlled from software or video card and I have not figured out how to do the video card controls.

Is it just the one skin that cause the windows to not expand fully? Skins can be set to size any way you want. Maybe the skin you are using has the screen edge clips set to a negative value.
Did you update your windowblinds recently?
If it was the monitor then you would be having the same problem when using the default XP theme I would think.

I had this problem with any skin I used. I uninstalled WB today and then redownloaded and installed WB with its latest update of yesterday. It appears it is the MagicTune software of Samsung. When I exit out of that program, all is well.

Ah, then you may contact customer support if it is a problem with the software, and maybe they will eventually come up with a update to fix the problem. But, if it is a black area, then maybe you can adjust stretch the screen size to fix it. I always have to adjust the screen size on my new monitors. It took me weeks before I was happy with the settings on my new monitor.

If the magic tune software doesn't add anything that you want, why not just disable it in msconfig?

ChasUGC: I would like to adjust the screen size, but have been told by Samsung it has to be done via the video card since this is a DVI input. Any ideads how that is done? I have a MSI video card and am waitin for a call back from them. Hard to say when that might be. I uninstalled the Magic Tune software. It also does adjust the brightness so I may have to put it back on and than disable thru MS config. Right now it is pretty good looking except for the very little black lines. I have never heard of adjust through the video card so I am at a real loss on that one.

ut oh, the last time I got those, my video card was toast. I probably did exactly what you did too. I got a new monitor.

Heck, we can always use a new monitor, especially if it is larger.

Then, I had to buy a new videocard.

ChasUGC: I bought a new video card specificly to work with the DVI monitor. It is a MSI (NVIDIA FX5700 LE) which I was told was good. Any ideas?

Question: What resolution are you running?  You know that you shouldn't change the resolution on a digital LCD screen?  Your native resolution is 1280 x 1024.  If you have if set to something else, bring it back to that.

If you are using that resolution, then your problem is somewhere else, but be aware that your image will always be much better in your screen's native resolution.

Just Jane, the most important thing about any video card these days is the Amount of Ram it provides. This helps to reduce your CPU and memory usage. The best cards I believe provide all in one capabilities. Meaning that you can watch TV shows with them without leaving the computer. It's great for not missing a favorite TV show or important news broadcast.

Personally, I will never buy another Nvidia video card. I had a Nvidia RivaTNT 64MB and it went kaput after just two years. That is what forced me to buy a new monitor thinking that was the cause of my video problems. Then, my warranty expired on my computer and I had to buy another videocard on my own. It seems that a lot of those Nvidia Cards, especially the TNT models stop working just after the warranty expires. That sucks!

So, personally, I'll never trust Nvidia again. And, their website won't support the videocards that you get with a system. So, you're stuck mostly with waiting for the computer manufacturer to make updated drivers. Like a computer manufacturer really knows anything but how to mess up you system and hardware.

I prefer ATI video cards. They are becoming more and more popular. I brought a 128MB ATI card and I am very happy with it. Their drivers are awesome and always work. Nvidia drivers were a pain in the neck for me.

Regarding your problem. Most monitors have adjustable h-size and v-size, right on the monitor. If your monitor does it through software, then you will need to find those adjustments. If you are seeming black spaces around your screen, then you need to find and adjust those monitor settings.

Bleh, don't want this help request fall into a NVidia/ATI debate. Both are good, both can fail.  I checked the specs of your card on MSI's web site, Just Jane, and it is a good card, very good actually.  Do you have the 128 Megs or the 256 Megs model?  Not that it matters in this case, both are very good.

Anyhow, check your resolution, as I said. Something tells me that may be where your problem is. I may be wrong though.

ChasUGC and Paxx: The card I have has 256 ram. I have spent most of the day today on the phone with MSI (video manufacturer) and Samsung. MSI support, I believe is questionable, as no one told me with digital you cannot adjust the screen (i.e. move left, right, up, down, this I figured out on my own going back and forth between digital and analog. Analog showed the screen adjustmentdigital did not. Sure wish the unit had direct controls on it, but it does not. It is all software controled and the digital hook up is control via the video car. Samsung had me plug in the analog to do an auto adjustment and there was no change. They decided it was a bad monitor, so a new one is on the way. Samsung said there should be no more than about 1/16" around the perimiter of the monitor. I am running the max resolution of 1280x1024. I will say this, I connected my old LCD (NEC) to the analog to see what it was like. NO black lines or at least very minute ones that where hardly noticable. I can live with what I have, but when you pay 650 for a monitor and 200 for a video card, you ought to be able to have it look great from the beginning. The colors and clarity on this unit are great. When I look at the old NEC monitor, it made me realize there was a huge quality difference. So....Samsung said they ship from NJ. I hope to have the replacement by Friday! As to the video card, I will keep in mind about the ATI. I had one of those in the past and it was good. My problem is I was green when I went looking for a video card and took the advise of the computer store person I never should have. I always get frustrated going to that store (local store that builds units), but in a small town things are limited. Next time, I will come to this group when I need advise about computer components. Thanks again, guys!

Just Jane: don't regret your purchase. You bought a very good card, and it seems the problems you are having are related to the screen not the video card.  NVidia used to rule, and now ATI is catching up and are probably as good now. But it doesn't make NVidia any bad. Actually, NVidia is what powers the new Mac G5s, and believe me Apple only chooses top components for their top of the line computers.
