High Resolution BootSkin

Has the development of the HIGH RESOLUTION version of BootSkin died?

If not, will it be made available anytime soon?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure where you're getting your not quite accurate info from, but the chances of the high-res one seeing the light of day are very slim because the current Bootskin that's available is causing problems for some people.
Only way it'll be out is the low-res one gets to a point where it's totally bug free.

o really? hehehe last i heard they were workin on it...

not surprising though bcuz windows only boots in 16 colors anyway so im not getting how they would get say, 256.

but like i said look through the libraries, there are many nice bootskins, here try this one gifted artist's bootskins::: https://www.wincustomize.com/myskins.asp?AuthorID=834387

They're more than working on it, it already exists. It just won't have much hope of release unless the low res one bugs can be resolved.

From what I can see, these bugs are caused by hacks of the operating system. Legal or not, I'm referring to the OEM's. Many manufacturers like IBM, Gateway, HP, Compac, will license a operating system and then break it so that it doesn't work like it was made to work. Just so that they can get their broken software to work right. Is it Stardock's responsibility to fix it?

Actually, from what Brad has said on the topic in the past the problem is caused by some BIOS and/or mobo manufacturers having shoddy VESA implementations in some BIOSes.. As you said, it's probably caused by some engineer noticing that if he only supports half the standard VESA spec he can increase POST/boot-time by 1/10th of a second and then the marketing wonks can tout their mobo as having the fastest POST time around.. I'm being slightly sarcastic of course but you get the idea... I really hope that it will at least be released on SDC as I have never had ANY trouble with ANY build of bootskins on ANY of the 3 machines I've used it on..

Just as a matter of interest, what makes/models were/are those machines?

I thought VESA was only neccessary for having more than 16 colors. Hmm.
Many game manufacturers will release a game knowing that it won't work on some systems. Then, they release a patch. I'm sure that by now the gang at Stardock are aware of which Bios/Manufacturers will cause a problem with the program. Maybe they need to create a readme file or a purchase warning about certain Bios before they release the program. ObjectDock Plus had many such problems. It would be ashame not to see a program, as innovative as a full color, or even 256 color boot skin program.

Let's see...

custom box: ASUS P4S533 w/ Leadtek Winfast A250 Ti4600
laptop: DELL Inspiron 8600 ATI video (not sure of the exact BIOS rev)
Work Box: Some DELL don't remember the make off the top of my head.

Oh, and it's on my other custom box that my GF has, it has an ASUS mobo as well.

Good Luck All!

High res bootskin has worked fine for me in the past. I was using it with a P3 800 mhz setup with a chaintech mobo.

Exactly what high res Boot Screen software have you tried, Kona?
bootskin 106 vesa.exe, maybe....

I want what kona's been drinking, please.

More on topic: perhaps a list of compatible BIOSes/versions of BootSkin used should be assembled to find out when to expect problems. I see a lot of requests for help on this, so mayhap it can be usefull.

mayhap

This is great! Was this an early morning combination of maybe and perhaps?!? Anyway, I'd love to get my hands on the high res version of bootskins seeing as all of my machines work just fine with all of the pre-release versions!

I guess I'll just have to be patient a while longer... Man, I hate being patient..

'mayhap' is a real word....somewhat 'archaic', however...

i thought it was mayhem?

Different words...different meanings....

mayhap. perhaps, perchance....

Been reading too much Thor comics. For some reason Stan Lee (original writer of said comic) figured Norse deities would speak archaic English (hence the use of words like "mayhap"). I'd figure they'd speak Old Norse though.

I don't know if the hi-res BootSkin will ever see the light of day. If it does, it's liable to be loaded with disclaimers because we just can't seem to find a happy place for all machines.

It's not just the VESA implementations, there's something subtle going on with driver load order or initialization where even 2 people with the same video card could have different experiences.

Mr Kwilas was intimately involved with the OS/2 version of Object Desktop (?). If memory serves (& there's no guarantee of that at all! ). That was the first Stardock product I ever purchased. Is there some sort of customer loyalty award (HINT )?
