but, thanx for the advise'
I look forward to more of your work.
Im one of your biggest fans.
Great designs, and good customer service, what more could I ask for.
To be honest....my themes are 'quirky' at best.
There are better themers out there ...
Main thing is to get the 'hang of it' and make your own.....that's what LiteSTEP [alternate shells] is all about....
Dont kill me.
Ok it crashed. So I tried downloading the RC3. I dont know what to do with it. Can you please tell me as simply as possible what to do please. I have the file unzipped. I click on the application and it says there is know step.rc file in this directory.
so I will go jump off a cliff now.
Litestep.exe is installed to 'C:\Litestep\....that is where your existing shell is....with subdirectories for themes, etc.
the extracted files from RC3 do NOT have a step.rc or anything to do with configuring....you have all that already.
Just copy the entire Litestep directory and subdirectory....NOT MOVE.....to a temp file....just in case....eg....c:\temp\.
Then
copy [overwrite] the RC3 files.....to c:\litestep\ and you will be prompted with 'do you want to replace'?....say yes....and it's done....
| OK....check that every module loaded is the correct version as listed in my readme.txt file... |
I see the text file. But what exactly should be where? I want to double check it.
The default lite step theme works.
popup2.dll version 1.16
systray2.dll version 1.90
rabidvwm.dll version 1.01 [*NetLoadModule]
traytasks version 1.7 [*NetLoadModule]
mzscript version 0.8.6l [*NetLoadModule]
geekamp version 1.9.71 [*NetLoadModule]
label version 1.99 [*NetLoadModule]
layercut version 1.72 [*NetLoadModule]
lsslider version 1.71 [*NetLoadModule]
I dont see anything below systray2.dll. Where should they be and how can I get them?
desktop2.dll version 1.4
popup2.dll version 1.16
systray2.dll version 1.90
Should they be in there
I do see popup2-2.1.4
The remaining modules should be in the modulesdir (C:\Litestep\Modules\).
If your Litestep setup is missing any of those, you will want to download, unzip, and copy the modules into the corresponding directories (as per I mentioned above).
Syntax of the modules in the theme.rc is very critical.
If the loadmodule line asks for:
desktop2.dll
then you want just desktop2.dll, not desktop2-2.0
That is something to watch for. You can change the theme.rc to say desktop2-2.0 (if that is the module you have, and can't find the other)
But don't play with those loadmodules lines unless you have to.
I downloaded and installed it "fresh"
Then I did like Jafo suggested above and downloaded the RC3 files and put them in the c:\litestep\ directory.
Then I downloaded and installed the Fetchi Lite Step theme and installed it by double clicking it.
It downloaded the modules and I double checked to ensure that they were there.
Im running Windows XP pro Pentium 4 2.53 Ghz with a gig of ram and 128 geforce graphics card.
When I start the Fetchi theme the bars on the left and right just dissappear from the screen and on occaision I cant even do anything but hit my EMERGENCY fall out switch!
The default theme works fine.
I am probally going to test a few others.
Can anyone provide a link to the module "Desktop2.dll version 1.4" Just so I can be sure that I have that correct one. Even though Im pretty sure I do. Im losing to much sleep over this. I really have to find another hobbie.lol
Any help would be appreciative.
Now I am going to go back to the Lite Step Site in the link above and continue reading.
I check this post every time I blink so leave a comment would be nice!

I quit for tonight.
Why JAFO why me........ Tell me damn it.
When 'someone' invented the OTS and OTS2 standards the world of LiteSTEP was going to be a 'piss-easy' environment.
Not so.
In THEORY module version downloads, etc being automated 'should' solve many issues...but I think there is clearly some 'issues' to resolve for those without sufficient patience to successfully problem-solve.
csurfside...
It appears that much of your problems are stemming from 'layercut.dll'...the module that handles the animated shortcuts that my 'animated' themes are now using.
This module is [or appears to be] buggy....and that usually means it leaks like a sieve.
I have had a heck of a lot of 'fun' convincing them to work.....still every now and then on recycle, those Antares 'panels' refuse to rotate.....usually only one of them...which is really odd....
My first suggestion is you stop using any themes with 'layercuts' in them.
There are squillions of other themes to use.
Perhaps I should go back to the antiquated 'rainmation.dll'....at least it works....[though proggy loading doesn't on the RC builds....at least the anis work].
One really important pre-requisite of Litestep using is....patience.
Generally, re-installing Litestep is not necessary.....the Installer works.....make sure everything is 'normal' with placements....don't install LS to a folder called 'aardvarks' or something silly....always dl any module mentioned/requested by the 'netloadmodule' lines.....they are not in Litestep distros by default, hence the theme request for them to be added.
Learn to 'debug' your own theme installations by commenting out alternate modules in the theme.rc to see if odd behaviour stops....or worsens [don't comment out the 'desktop' or 'jdesk' modules....whichever used....or the theme won't run at all....[nothing to interract with].
With any visual 'load' on your screen.....games, alpha-blending, animations, it's important to have up-to-date graphic drivers.....as the 'bugs' may just be in your system, not the OS shell/theme.
More often than not it is very difficult to debug anothers' computer by remote.
One vaguelly possible way is to zip [with paths] your entire Litestep directory and subdirectories and perhaps email them to me.....I can install and see what happens......that will at least rule out any actual LS issue, meaning it's something else in your system...
I tried what you advised yesterday.
No luck. The nipple's are flat!
Any chance you could update Fetchi so that it does'nt use the Layer cut you described?
csurfside....layercuts is the module that provides the animations.
Originally Nijikon Fetchi used rainmation.dll which is a much older module and doesn't handle evars, etc and modern tricky bits.....layercuts is better in many ways but still seems to have issues of its own.
The only solution is to use shortcut.dll instead and do away with the animation.....a backward step for most...as it'll lose some of its 'fun'....
