Ok, try turning off your computer by pulling the plug out in the back, if you are running xp, when you turn it back on you will have forced it to give you the safe mode option, operating in safe mode takes away some stuff, but if you go into safe mode and still cannot access the desktop properties, then we will know whether or not you have a serious problem or a minor one. Try this and then post an update and I will try to help as best I can

Also I might add you should try all the virus removal programs you can get your hands on, freeware and shareware both, formatting should be considered the LAST RESORT when dealing with a virus, I don't know about the other users here but the only time I ever format is when I am planning to sell that particular computer, other than that, there's no way I'd risk losing all my stuff

One can normally enter safe mode by repeatedly pressing the F8 key during normal bootup and then ing Safe Mode from the menu provided. It's not necessary to pull the plug on your machine.

No but if you're mad it it for trying to be smarter than you, it can help you feel better and at the same time let you enter safe mode, plus its too late cuz he already did it ...

Formatting your hard drive to remove viruses will not neccessarily work. This is because certain viruses can reside in your boot partition. And, boot partitions are not erased when one does a normal hard drive re-format. So, I always delete all partitions, as well, when reformatting my hard drive.
