DesignCaddy....it was never particularly 'clever' to allow a type-setter's error to determine how a language should 'evolve'....call it a horse and cart issue....or the tail wagging the dog.

jafo, aluminum, though in this case an alternative spelling, comes down to dialect

Gorsh, DesignCaddy, I had no idea. Of course I hain't been here as long as you, so I'll try to keep my nose out of it. (A couple of peeks at my central PA dialect closer to Pittsburghese than Philadelphian)

Actually, I always had fun comparing dialects and it was fun with a lot of back of forth and claims of ignorance on both sides with my fellow engineers in London.

But, I guess the English do have a knack for understated and inoffensive delivery when appropriate, and that was probably better with my willingness to (tongue-in-cheek) play the "ugly American". But that was another time and place.

I assumed when Jafo said what he did that it was almost a form of endearment for us Yanks.

OK, warm and fuzzy all done.

#72 by DesignCaddy - 5/10/2004 1:55:39 AM jafo, aluminum, though in this case an alternative spelling, comes down to dialect. it doesnt mean an entire nation is stupid because children have grown up hearing every older person around them pronouncing a word differently. i'm told my south jersey/philadelphia accent says Clawsit instead of Closet. most people say wooder instead of water. i don't think that makes people from jersey stupid.the SR-71, a well known jet, was actually named the 'RS-71' but the man introducing it at its commisioning messed up. so it went down in the books as SR. that doesn't mean everyone who's ever called it the SR is wrong. things change, get evolved. but nobody has to call them on it.you didn't say in your post that we were therefore stupid, but you've said similar things in the past implying americans are indeed stupid, ignorant, or just plain arrogent because of the different way we say or do things. ive been thinking it for a while now and its just something building up in the back of my mind. its god damn irritating and insulting to get called on every single difference between oz english and american english whether the difference comes down to a typo in a dictionary that became commonplace to a politition giving incorrect information to his own people. its two different countries, rules are different. think of Aluminum as the american word for Aluminium and move on. thanks
