Finishing my GUI entries ahead of schedule? Oh Well...

Today, our parent company based in Texas has decided to "padlock" the office in New York where I happen to work. True I have to give up my company vehicle and cell phone, but this setback was offset by the privelage I was afforded of telling 25 men that I had worked hand in hand with at one point or another, that the paycheck I was handing them would be their last. The fleet manager , locking the gate , literally, with tears in his eyes,a shiny new padlock, one that he didnt have a key for. Priceless. I have customers waiting for work to be completed. They will be waiting for some time to come. I was told I am not allowed to contact them.
I will spend about 2 weeks helping with liquidation before I join "my men". My severence package will afford me the free time needed to complete my GUI entries sooner than I planned. I don't mean to sound flippant. What I am honestly trying to say is that I am kinda numb and of no mind to search right now. I don't have the energy or "free ram" in my brain to contemplate my next career move. I am well "bummed" out. I really needed to vent, So without making it sound like a cure for cancer, skinning is and will be a much needed avenue of escape. I'm just really glad to be here right now.

sad that the company did that. At least you have an outlet for the distress. Hopefully your coworkers can find some productive way to deal with it.

That's really sad... I went through the same scenario 20 years ago but I had a new job in a couple days (several to choose from actually). Today it's not like that anymore, I don't want to sound negative but it's brutal out there right now.

If you don't mind my asking, what business are you in and are you a company we would have heard of?

I truly wish you and your buddys the best of luck. My guess is NY isn't overflowing with job oportunities either...

It is truly not the end of the world. I am just a little dissapointed and it was a depressing day on the whole. I left the office today with a few tangible offers. I am just not ready.
We were a landscape construction firm . Grounds Control. We were owned by Summit and in part by Sanitor's Inc. I dont know if those names mean anything to anybody , but our clients included Steven Spielberg, Pep Boys, Home Depot. We were down from 100 employees to about 30. But after reorganizing, we were optimistic. Just wasnt meant to be. Oh well, I really needed more time with my new Wacom intuos2

Tough blow ....hope things work out for you and the folks affected by this. Don't know if this is feasible or not, in your situation, or how localize what your branch of the company did, but if the reorganizing had put you and your men into a position to be competitive, why not just "collectively" take over the business that Summit just d.ropped. Form a new company, with a shared stake in it with your men. I'm sure Summit's "now previous" clients would be interested in doing business with "familiar" faces and expectations of quality of work vs. having to find some other firm to fit-in. Just a left-field thought....not really knowing your total situation as such. Best of luck to you.

look for that window of opportunity. I feel awful for you. we've been there done that twice now. while your job was specialized, I feel pretty confident that the duties you performed can be translated in another way, if you open your mind to the challeng of finding out how.

But even if I don't or can't, I am sure the "windows" China , wulfn and Garry spoke of will open. If not, there is always Forced Entry
I feel better already. A good nights sleep. A "hearing ear" from some folks on this Message Board. If the sun comes out today as was foretold, I will do some yard work. Over the coming days, in between phone calls and some extra time with my family, I'll get to spend some more time around here.

My first jobs were in the aerospace industry in the late 80's-early 90's, and you know what happened to aerospace back then...the bottom ped out hard and fast. I was out of work for nearly a year, so I definitely sympathize with what you're going through, Jason. Best of luck in finding a new job, and yes, China most assuredly does speak the truth!
