Question for Yrag and other techies...

Does anyone know what a "CMC Mail Provider" is and where I can get one? I keep coming across this when I click "send to" and then "desktop (create shortcut)" to create a desktop shortcut. I get this prompt that no CMC Mail Provider is installed.

Hmmmm..you don't see that much anymore...Do you have a MAPI mail account and is your mail app and newsreader (or FTP client) one and the same?

Honestly yrag...I haven't got a clue as to what your asking...all I know is one day it was working fine and the next it wasn't. Would be nice if I could find a link to download this CMC Mail Provider...did some searching for it but have yet to find one or find out how to install one.The only mail accounts I'm aware of are my Outlook Express & MSN email account.

And thanks MGiff for the link, but I've seen numerous explanations about it, but nothing as to how to resolve it and reinstall one.

OK...open up Outlook Express and go to settings....you're looking to see if you have a POP account or MAPI account setup....unless you're on a corporate nework it needs to be setup as a POP3. Something could have changed it to a MAPI....doubtful, but let's keep it simple for the time being...

The MSN account is probably Hotmail...and should be different then your POP account. If MSN is running in the tray log off and setup your ISP POP account as noted above with your ISP main e-mail addy and it should work with no problems...

Can't find "settings" anywhere in my Outlook Express, but I'm pretty sure it's set as a Pop account. And I don't see MSN running in the tray.

Somehow I must have de-leted this CMC Mail Provider thing. The question is...can I reinstall it somehow?

script problem on the board...one problem at a time

Go to Control Panel/Mail. Highlight account and click on properties and it will tell you how you're set up.

BTW: did you (recently) install OE update Q330994? Look in 'Add and Remove Programs' in Control Panel and see if it's there.

No Yrag...not on a network...just a basic dialup connection...and no...I do not see Q330994 update.

OK...first you have to understand that CMC is a MS Connection Manager usually associated with networked IMAP accounts...thus you can't just go and download something to get it. I would suggest that you un-install OE (save your address book) thru Control Panel\Add and Remove\Window Components. Re-boot and re-install it the same way. It should restore the correct POP settings and the system files you're missing...

Ok Yrag...really dumb question...when you say OE...this is...and no laughing... Ok...you can laugh a little...

Hey, I do have one question...is OE set as your Default E-mail client in Internet options?

No it isn't...and before I uninstall it...unless your going to tell me not to after the question you just asked...where would I reinstall it from? I was looking for a disk to reinstall it but can't find anything with it on... never had to do this before so I'm pretty much twiddling my thumbs here.

To the best of my knowledge it is MSN9 as my email client...if thats what your asking. I don't use Hotmail.

Wish I had asked that question 3 days ago...

If you really want this 'send to' and 'Desktop shortcut' you must go to Control Panel\Internet Option\Programs and change your Default E-mail client to Outlook Express...MSN9 does not support those options. In a nutshell...you can use OE with the 'send to' thingys or do without them and stay with MSN. Personally, I'd do without the options (they're pretty worthless) and stick with MSN...but that's up to you. Let me know.

When it comes down to it it's really not a major problem...I have a work around by sending whatever to my documents folder and creating a shortcut there and then draging it to my desktop. I was just hoping to restore this thing to it's original operating condition. What I think happened is I installed some old powertoys in order to add "send to any folder" to my sendto functions. And in the process I got some stuff added to the menu...such as "cmc mail", and since it wasn't there before and I had no idea why it was there but thought it was more spyware or something along that line...so...I...uh...de-leted it... Whoopsie!

I tried restoring it by uninstalling the powertoys and reinstalling them...thinking this would restore it...but that didn't do the trick.

I should be flogged!

...and you should have mentioned that 3 days ago...

...just drag stuff around and leave your setup the way it is. If it's not giving you that error at any other time, then you're good to go with either mail proggie. You can get some tweak proggies (new ones) that can change your right click menu, but do us both a favor...DON'T

...carry on

Sorry about that Yrag...I had forgotten about the powertoys thing. I just called msn to see if they knew anything about it and they thought it might be something to do with OE, so we went through the configuration steps...again...and it didn't change anything. So the sendto problem is a little annoying but nothing critical. So I'll just leave it as it is until I can find a definite fix for it...Oh...and until then...I won't play around with any tweaks for it...
