Folder Portals & Fences - Default View Settings & Recursive View Settings

We hope this message finds you well.

First of all, thank you for bringing Fences to life! It is an incredibly useful tool for staying organized, and we truly appreciate the work that has gone into it.

We’d like to bring to your attention a feature request we’ve been anticipating for some time, one that we believe would significantly enhance the functionality of Folder Portals and Fences.

Issue Example

Currently, there is no way for a Folder Portal (and Fences, where applicable) to recursively maintain the same view settings across all folder levels, down its hierarchy, up toward its parent, and even to the root.

For example, if we set a Folder Portal for the folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\" with the default view Medium Icons, and then manually change the view to Details, navigating into a subfolder such as "Fences" reverts the view back to Medium Icons. This requires users to manually adjust the view settings for every folder they navigate to, making Folder Portals with a custom view (like Details) cumbersome and impractical.

Feature Requests

To resolve this issue, we propose the following improvements:

1. Recursive View Settings for Navigation

• Introduce a toggle to apply view settings recursively when "Allow Navigation" is enabled.
• Implement this as a simple "Apply view settings recursively" toggle under the "View" menu, positioned below "Roll-up Fence" and "Exclude from Quick-hide".
• This would ensure that the chosen view setting remains consistent across all levels of navigation within the Folder Portal or Fence.

2. Global Default View Settings

• Introduce an option in Fences' software settings to set a default view setting for all newly created Folder Portals and Fences.
• Folder Portals and Fences should have separate default settings.
• Under each default view setting, include checkboxes to:
  • Apply the default view setting to all existing Folder Portals and/or Fences.
  • Specify whether "Apply view settings recursively" should be enabled or disabled by default.

3. Per-Portal & Per-Fence View Setting Overrides

• Allow users to apply view settings individually for specific Folder Portals or Fences, overriding the global default if necessary.

We hope you’ll consider implementing this feature in a future update, as it would greatly benefit users who rely on Folder Portals and Fences for organization and productivity.
