Fences Crashes

Brand new Windows 11 installation. This computer has two users, one is local admin. The other user is Microsoft Azure joined user which is also an admin user. Fences works on the local admin user but crashes on the other user side. Followed the link from techsupport https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling but still no joy. It seems like a permissions issue but not sure which directory should have what permissions. Please help. We just bought 10 licenses and ready to claim refund if it doesn't work.

Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need more information on your system.

  1. Windows 11 full version number. Use Winver.exe to get it.
  2. Fences full version number.

I will respond here as I did in your ticket: SSN-70160

Fences works on the local admin user but crashes on the other user side.

Crashes how - on Windows log on, on config open, when Fences are drawn..?

Is this to mean this happens with a remote session to the PC or still on a local PC with different user credentials \ permissions?

Its still a local user login not remote. Both users are admin users - one is local user and the other user is domain joined (Microsoft Entra ID).

As soon as the user logs in the desktop icons are slow to appear under the affected user and then the following message pops up:

I recreated your stated test

  • Under a generic local admin account, installed Fences
  • Logged out \ in with an Azure domain user (my own)

Fence loaded and rendered under that account without error.

Something about your Azure user logon process is different than if they were local.  If I had to guess, you are doing some \My Document redirection...?  Its important to note that Fences runs in the Windows Explorer process so anything you might be doing with the Azure logon that affects it could be the cause.

No Folder redirections. Just plain and simple domain join. I have my computer domain joined with exact same setup and no issues. The laptop is a brand new installation from scratch with all windows updates. I think it is some kind of permissions issue. Do you not see any clues in the debug file I sent earlier?

Ok, so this is a case of 1 single PC not working with an Azure domain user, perhaps out of many that do work just fine (certainly yours as you have stated), yes..?  It's this one - seemingly unique in some way - PC, correct, all others work as expected without error?

It works on All Windows 10 computers even with the standard users. For Windows 11 there is only one other user who is Admin(me) and it works. Other Windows 11 users it crashes if the user is not admin. But this particular user who is also admin it crashes. So not sure why its happening on Windows 11.

Is there absolutely anything unique about this user?  My logic path should be clear here, if it works for every other admin user but this one, something is likely funky about it.

Ok, this morning another new installation. Dell Latitude laptop. default user is admin. Installed Fences and activated and it works good. Then join the computer to Microsoft Entra ID with the new user and set user as Administrator. As soon as the user logs in, same error message that was previously reported. This is also Windows 11 same version as reported before. I'll keep testing if it doesnt work please let me know the process to get refunded.

Is the laptop managed by a MDM solution? Are there scripts that run on corporate login sent from the MDM?

We are only using the default MDM policy and there are no scripts.

So my test was under Windows 10 and you have stated your successful ones were as well.

IT is setting me up with a Win11 test environment and Ill let you know the results.

The test on Windows 11 was the same, Fences 5.51 loaded just fine with my Azure domain credentials.
