Fences 3.16 Release Feedback Thread

Fences 3.16 Release Feedback Thread

With the Fences 3.16 release, we are creating this thread so that users can report any observed issues.

Obtaining the product

Object Desktop members can get the release from within Object Desktop Manager

Individual purchases (as well as Object Desktop Members) can also be obtained from your account page: https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products

For guest check-out purchase (no account), from this link: http://www.stardock.com/support/productkeyretrieval

Reporting an issue

Please include the following for anything found:

  • Exact Windows version \ build (winver.exe)

  • Detailed steps to recreate the issue seen

  • Screenshots and videos are very helpful.  Videos can be uploaded to a cloud drive service (GoogleDrive, DropBox, OneDrive, YouTube), with a shared link included in your post.  Images can be copied and pasted directly into a post.

  • If there are specific apps that the app does not work (well) with, please note what apps and their exact versions.  If any app is not common, a link to a trial version would be appreciated.

Thank you for your interest and any time you put into making Fences 3 a better product.

Are there any plans to fix the high Explorer load introduced by the latest version? I can live with staying on an older version, but it would be nice to know whether disabling update notifications is in order!?

>> if something is working for almost all, one needs to eliminate contributing factors for those where its is not working as expected.

I would be more likely to try getting some debugging info before I start pointing fingers. I've built logging features in to most of my apps for exactly this purpose. If that doesn't help I'd probably start looking at windows logs. Quite often I do find my software has developed symptoms as a result of third party issues, but I usually do a bit of creative programming as customers usually can't get the bigger dog to budge.

I figure if one persons going to have an issue, another might follow. Being at it's my software that's being affected, it's my reputation that's on the line (even if you can show specifically what the problem is you often still get blamed). So I don't usually look to lay blame. I look to find a way to work around the issue, since it might makes for more reliable software.

I'm glad to see a download link has finally been made available. While I hadn't read every post I was curious enough to read a fair few and it struck me that there were a few people literally "begging" for an older installer...

Sorry, I can't pass any installer to anyone. What you can get will be directly from your account download page.

and Reply #38

The account download page links the current bugged version.

I clearly jumped to the wrong conclusion. I apologise for that.

If this were a direct conflict with Windows itself, or a select stable of popular 3rd party software, I would agree.  For example, were there conflicts with Adobe products (there have been over the years), they get more attention.

But as you aptly pointed out:

As a total nobody developer I also get treated poorly by security software (Heuristic scans are the worst for people like me).
End of b0b0baggins8712's quote

If you \ we had a nickel for every false positive an AV product has produced for either of our software products over the years, we would have retired long ago.

For the record, we have reached out to AV software houses over the years (ForcePoint inc).  If we get answers from them at all, we have worked with them to better identify and classify our products.

Lastly, this is one feature being observed on a product, Fences 3, that is 2 full major versions ago.  While we make every effort to make sure nothing catastrophic happens with prior versions, it would be a form of malpractice if our primary focus was not making sure the current version was as robust as possible.

Thank you for the feedback, b0b0baggins8712; it is well received.

re. my replies 6, 7, and 8 ... I have not been successful in getting beyond the 'problem'.  In fear of losing my present structure with fooling around with what works in my Fences 3 ver 3.1.3.3, I think I will forgo updating to anything since I seem to not be knowledgeable enough to navigate the many tricks, or do this stuff.  I am getting discouraged with the product.  Thanks for the efforts guys.

The option remains to install and test with a trial of Fences 5, the current version.

Hello.

Trying to deactivate the update notification didn't work. So either I would really like to know if the Explorer CPU load bug will be fixed or how to disable the notification!?

Thanks and regards.

Thanks for the quick answer. I already used the registry key, but it seems like I kept it at 0 instead of 1. So let's wait a few days to see how it works now. :congrat:

For reports of increased CPU usage when invoking Winkey + D, we have a build where we believe we have addressed it:

https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences_3.1.7.1-j90-Setup.exe

For those that have reported it here, I have sent you personal PMs to let you know it is available.

If I upgrade to Fence 5 or current version, Will the problem disappear?
End of supitcha's quote

I don't think that could work, not even with Fences v5. What you can do is try to set Forcepoint to whitelist Fences from doing its job.

Sean Drohan,

I'm still running Fences 3.1.3.3 ...   Unable to make Fences 3.16 do anything.  Being desperate, I would love to install and test with a trial of Fences 5, the current version.

Now, please forgive my novice-ness, but how do I actually try this without loosing my present "3.1.3.3" frames/fences or should I somewhere find Fences 3.16 ... or do this Fences_3.1.7.1-j90-Setup.exe first?

I am at a loss, should I just try to run the ... https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#disableupdate and live with my (working) 3.1.3.3 .... ???

Please forgive my lack of expertise ...

Ken

While you wont lose any of your Fences \ icon arrangements if you install the Fences 5 trial, you can manually back them up if that provided you more comfort.

Some late feedback: Fences 3.13, 3.16 and 3.17 still cause full Explorer.exe load here when the mouse-pointer is moved over the empty desktop. In the past 3.13 did not do that here, so either something about Explorer has changed or Fences retains some broken settings even when being uninstalled with the option to remove settings.

Need to know, currently you're using which Windows version? Also need its full OS Build numbers.
