Start11 has stopped working

Hi all - I'm a recent user. Although I've never got Start 11 to look the way I want, it has worked

Last night windows updated and now Start 11 does nothing at all. I tried opening it and checking it all but still wont work, and I even re-downloaded it from Stardock, reinstalled it and then entered all my settings but nothing

I just get the standard Windows 11 start menu and it's awful - I cant find anything

Is anyone able to help?

Thanks

Colin

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Which Windows version you have update to? Use Winver.exe to get its full version number.

Thanks

Try uninstall Start11, reboot immediately after uninstall finished. download the latest v2 2.01 Beta from your account page. Install it. Reboot immediately after it finished. Retest it and report back.

Thanks - where would I find this download? In my account page it only shows Beta 1.47.3

I am sorry, I thought you on Start11 v2. Look like you on Start11 v1. Yes, that is correct version for you. v1.47.3 [Beta]. Use that version.

I only bought it a couple of months ago! Are you saying it is obsolete already? No updates included?

No, Start11 v1 is not obsolete. It should work for current Windows 11 system without issue.

Thanks - I've used the beta and everything works now so thanks for the help

Bitterly disappointed though to hear that there are no updates included and that the 'purchase' is outmoded in just a couple of months. It would certainly put me off ever upgrading or purchasing another Stardock product

But it isn't outmoded and it's working perfectly well for you. Why should you feel "bitterly disappointed", as you put it? If you find you must have those additional features, depending when you purchased your current version, you may be eligable for a discount.

v2 isn't free for you because of the wealth of new features the devs put time into developing and that 2 in the v2 means a major upgrade of features justifying a new version, and purchase: Stardock's policy since forever.

I didn't say I wanted a free version. I do expect support and updates for a reasonable length of time though, as you get with virtually every other program

As to working properly, well no it wasn't hence this post! Used a beta version to fix it. If it happens again there's unlikely to be another fix

And as to 'stardocks policy since forever', how on earth would any new user know that? What a facetious and unhelpful comment. I certainly had no idea, there's no mention of it on the product page and I've never dealt with them before

Everyone has their own criteria and requirements. Criticising someone for having different ones to you is not really helpful

No one's making facetious comments nor unhelpful ones. That happens to be the policy, and it's in print. The fact you had no idea may well be true, and I don't doubt it, but that doesn't mean it isn't the policy which has been stated and explained many times here in forums.

By signing this screen when you install any Stardock product would be one (you are even required to do so):

The End User Licence Agreement is, as with most software, a lot of text to read, undestand and digest, but still the users' resposibilty, old or new. This has been common practice for many years. You could argue that noone read that, but the information is there.

However, we are here to help and support you with any version of Stardock products, past and present, should you encounter issues of any kind.

After you've bought it

As you say,  a lot of text and I bet you've never read it all either

'Slightly' different to upfront and open information on a product page before someone purchases

But you're determined to harass those with a different view to yours, and by doing so lose stardock more business

Harass? No, and hyperbole won't make it truer.

We tried to reassure you that you weren't the victim of unfair practices, and that help was available if you so choose.

I woke up to the same issue today. It's taken me three hours, but I found - well, stumbled upon - a solution.

1. Uninstall any taskbar addons

2. Reboot

3. Install the Valinet Explorer Patcher latest release from https://github.com/valinet/ExplorerPatcher

4. Reboot

Your taskbar will be back to the previous style (as in multi-row, resizing, add toolbars, lock/unlock) all re-enabled,

and you should have a Windows 7 style Start menu. You should now be able to:

5. Open Start11 and customize your Start Menu as you want. I'm running V1.47.

That ought to do it.

Note: I also uninstalled the latest Windows patch first, rebooted, then did the above. I have not rebooted yet - gotta get working - but fingers crossed, this will hold.

Hope this helps,

Myrkr

There is no need to install explorer patcher unless you already had an older version on your computer.

I suspect somehow something stopped Start11 from running and reinstalling Start11 by way of installing the beta (with uninstall and reboot in between) resolved the issue.

Turned my computer on this morning and now the same thing - no Start11

Can anyone help with this?

thanks

On restart do you have Start11Srv and Start11_64 in your processes list in TaskManager?  Thats under the details tab.

If you press the windows key do you get the Start11 or Win11 menu?

Ah - now that is very strange! If I press the Windows key on my keyboard I get Start11, if I press the Windows button on the screen I get the W11 one!

Thats useful as it means Start11 is functioning.

Are you 100% certain you do not have a version of Explorer Patcher installed?

I ask as older versions do not support newer versions of Windows and can leave Start11 confused thinking it needs to handle the taskbar like Windows 10 when in reality it needs to handle it like Windows 11.

I've never even heard of Explorer Patcher and don't know what it is so unless some other program has installed it then no it shouldn't be there

Is there a way to check? I see someone referenced it above - should I install the one linked to?

Does anyone else use your computer except you? I only ask because while you didn't install ExplorerPatcher, perhaps someone else might have?
