obstacles to upgrading to Win11

missing windows 10 start and toolbars

Hi, lots of work went into getting my windows 10 start screen just right and many of my often-used shortcuts live in toolbars in the taskbar.

Therefore, I have not updated yet but am looking into Start11 if this would be of help.

The first question is about the import of all my shortcuts and groups in the Windows 10 start screen: when I install Start11 (still in Win10), and select the style of Windows 10, will all my groups and Pins to the Start Screen be imported into Start11 - so that, after upgrading to Win11, I have everything as I know it?

The other functionality I have to find an alternative for is Toolbars. I thought that I might be able to use ObjectDoc (which I use for many years, but which apparently is not updated anymore for many year) but it appears it's missing something. For example, if I try to use the fly-out docklet for a folder with shortcuts to my apps,  it only picks up the executable from shortcut but not the command line parameters. Then I tried a tabbed doc, and first it seemed like a good option because I could move it all the way down to the task bar so that only the tabs peeked above the task bar, but once I move it up, I can't move it down to hide the main part of the tab behind the task bar. With the whole tabbed doc above the taskbar, it used too much screen space.

Any suggestions how I could get something similar to the toolbars (using very little real estate) with any of the stardock apps?

Cheers,
Gunter

Hello,

For your first question, yes, I believe, when you install Start11 it will import over from your Win10 Start panel into it. But, to be sure you should do the Start11 free trial.

For the second one. In Stardock Fences, you can use Portal Fence and link it to a shortcuts Folders or any folders you like. Than roll it up to minimize/hide it.

Thanks

I tried the trial version, and it did indeed try to work on my existing start menu but then got completely confused when it encountered the first tile group (you know where you combine several times into one and give it a name). After that the import attempt went down the hill. The tile groups seem to have been forgotten by the programmers of Start11.

Looks like I have to stick with Win10 a bit longer - hopefully MS will see the light and bring that start menu from win10 back for win11 - I think there is a chance.

Probably not so much for toolbars. And the Fences - wouldn't do for me, too unstable and even took away all my desktop icons. Unfortunately they came back when I uninstalled Fences  :-)

I just wished Stardock hadn't abandoned Objectdock - that had so much potential...
