Groupy 2 Language Localization Feedback Thread

We are creating this thread so that users can report any observed language localization issues with Groupy 2.

We employed a new process for generating translations and need to be confident that the translations meet the quality standards we have set for the product. Thus, what we are looking for is feedback from users who speak English fluently and any of the other supported languages:

  • German
  • Spanish
  • French
  • Korean
  • Russian
  • Portuguese - Brazil
  • Chinese (Simplified)
  • Chinese (Traditional)

Where are language files stored?

\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\Groupy\lang (if you installed over Groupy 1)
\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\Groupy2\lang

The .lng files listed there are human-readable text files - easily edited in Notepad or any text editor you prefer.

How are language files formatted?

The format is:

'English text'='translated text'

English (en) file example:

"Settings"="Settings"

Spanish (es) file example:

"Settings"="Ajustes"
Semi-colons, followed by text, would be commented-out lines (seen only in the en.lng file).

Reserved Words

Where 'Computer' or "Computers' is seen in English, it is replaced with 'PC' and 'PCs' respectively in the translated text (to preserve UI space).

Submitting language edits

The following is an example of what we are looking for in a reply post:

Lang file: (es.lng for example)

Follow by blocks of:

Line number (Notepad++ has them for example):
Old traslanted text:
New translated text:
Reason for edit: ('Poor phasing' or 'confusuing / conflicting direction')

Any 'New translated text' suggestions should be kept as short as possible as the Groupy 2 UI was designed to fit the English text shown.

We do not need every line evaluated, however, we need enough to see if there are categorical patterns of issues we can address.

Grading the translation

Finally, we are looking for an overall grade you would give the translation as a whole: Good / Fair / Bad

Thank you for your interest and any time you put into making Groupy 2 a better product.

Unfortunately, Japanese is not included in the list of languages to be supported. I like Groupy2 very much, but is it possible to add Japanese?

Below is a file I translated for my own use. (I put them on github because I can't seem to attach the files on this page, but I will remove them as soon as there is a problem)
https://github.com/DiGS-O5/ja.lng-for-groupy2/blob/main/ja.lng

I translated almost all English, but could not translate sentences with different grammatical word order.

The following are examples of them.

"Do you want to remove" "Group1" "from saved groups?"
"Automatically group all '" "Application1" "' windows together"

As an example, if the first sentence were rearranged to match the Japanese word order, it would look conceptually like this

"you" "from saved groups" "Group1" "do want to remove" ?

It is not impossible to force a translation file, but it is not the best method because the content of the left and right sentences will be swapped.

With the new (AI-driven) process we have employed, it absolutely is but we wanted to start with the 'supported languages' to make sure it was not a disaster.

If you would not mind, I would like to generate a ja.lng file for G2 and have you use it to see how good \ bad it is.  Here is a link to it:

https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/terkO5-ja.zip

Again, if you could let us know that its good \ fair \ poor, with examples of where it fails, that would be great.

Certainly, unlike other languages with the same word order as English, such as Japanese, which has different grammatical word order, AI-driven language support is likely to take time.

I checked the above language file and it seems to be garbled.
Differences in the generation process, such as 2-byte characters, may be the cause.

I hope I can be of help in providing feedback :)

Hello, the Simplified Chinese translation seems to be done by automatic machine translation, and there are many mistakes. I tried to make some corrections and improve the wording.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/17o0ghWFx_4pKa5ViG4DCeEqF3NQsOtcB/view?usp=sharing

Some sentences are still not very well translated, hope someone would improve it.
End of spraysparks's quote

Thank you for this.

Could you give us example lines of where this is the case?  It does not need to be many, just ones that highlight where it fails.

I would also very much like to know if any translation would have the user totally misunderstand a setting or function.

Again, thank you for the time and feedback, spraysparks.

"Stardock Groupy 2 Configuration"="星港Groupy 2配置"

"Stardock" shouldn't be translated.

"The tabs are placed above the window title bar.\n\nCan be configured to only show on hover from the tab appearance page."="标签位于窗口标题栏上方。"

Words after "\n\n" are not translated.

"Explorer enhancement settings"="探险增强设置"

"探险" means adventure in Chinese, here it should be "文件资源管理器"(File explorer).

"Do not replace tabs"="勿替换制表符"

"tabs" is translated as "tables".

As already reported in the other thread, some texts in the GUI seem to be untranslatable at the moment.
As there is no complete file with translatable strings, it's almost impossible to find all strings.
So no guarantee, that it's complete or translations will work if the GUI is fixed to display translated texts in all places.

As noted in the other thread, I think you have an old config still on your computer.  The english lng file does match up with the UI.

When Groupy 2 is installed, it carries with it a new lag files.  You would need to have installed it to have them.

Well, after removing and reinstalling Groupy 2, I had the updated language file in place.

Let's see - I've changed various strings:

Lang file: de.lng

Diff between built in lang file and my improved translation

New translation file

Reasons for editing:

- Poor phrasing,
- Wrong spelling,
- Sometimes words are simply cut,
- Same word translated differently in different places,
- Missing strings

Rating: Well, there's much room for improvement. I'd prefer using the English language over the German translation.

The original ZH-TW language file had too many translation errors.

I've spent a lot of time making corrections, so please update the language file in the next update.

I'd appreciate it.

We really appreciate the effort but we cannot evaluate it without at least some manifest of what you changed.  Did you keep any record of that?

Not sure if this is the right place, but here it goes:

I've set Groupy 2 to English, because I prefer that language for the App.
However, my Windows 11 is in German and because of that, not everything in Groupy 2 seems to be in English.

As you can see below, the update dialog still shows up in German.
Not a big issue for me, but noteworthy nonetheless:

That SAS (Stardock Activation Services) activation window is an individual component (present in all our modern apps) and would only show in the PC language.

de.lng (just the new 2.1 strings, for the old, see my former post)

Old: "Control how the close button works when using integrated tabs."=Steuern Sie, wie die Schließen-Taste funktioniert, wenn Sie integrierte Tabs verwenden."
New: "Control how the close button works when using integrated tabs."="Verhalten der Schließen-Schaltfläche bei der Benutzung integrierter Tabs."
Reason: Same wording for button as in other places, shorter

Old: "The close button in File Explorer or Windows Notepad should close the entire group"="Die Schließen-Taste im Datei-Explorer oder Windows-Notepad sollte die gesamte Gruppe schließen"
New: "The close button in File Explorer or Windows Notepad should close the entire group"="Die Schließen-Schaltfläche im Explorer und Editor schließt die gesamte Gruppe"
Reason: Same wording for button as in other places, translation for Explorer/Notepad like in the German version of Windows 11, "sollte" is grammatically wrong

Old: "When tabs are integrated into the title bar the close button should close the entire group"="Wenn Tabs in die Titelleiste integriert sind, sollte die Schließen-Taste die gesamte Gruppe schließen"
New: "When tabs are integrated into the title bar the close button should close the entire group"="Die Schließen-Schaltfläche schließt die gesamte Gruppe, wenn die Tabs in die Titelleiste integriert sind"
Reason: Same wording for button, "sollte" is grammatically wrong

Old: "Do not show the drop down arrow next to the new tab button"="Zeigen Sie den Dropdown-Pfeil neben der Schaltfläche Neuer Tab"
New: "Do not show the drop down arrow next to the new tab button"="Menü neben der 'Neuer Tab'-Schaltfläche ausblenden"
Reason: While the English text states "do not show...", the German text states "do show..."

Old: "New Explorer tabs should open in the same folder"="Neue Explorer-Tabs sollten im selben Ordner geöffnet werden"
New: "New Explorer tabs should open in the same folder"="Neue Explorer-Tabs im selben Ordner öffnen"
Reason: "sollte" is grammatically wrong

New: "System default language"="Sprache des Systems"
Reason: Missing

The German translation is horrible and of course as German I would like the English so not just the translators made mistakes here but also the people responsible for the product development as I cant change the language easily now.

In German not even the word "off" is translated correctly which tells everyone what is going on.

You can change language in Groupy 2 easier than you could in Groupy 1.

There is even a language picker on the about page.
