OK what should I do?

I pulled all my icons so I could remake them and sharpen them up a bit.

Should i make them all 128x128? I like that size.

I will be resizing, adding details, glass effects if I can, and shapening all of them.

To the admin who is moderating my uploads: I am so sorry But this is a learning experinence for me.

I'd make them 256 since at 128 If you made your zoom higher they would be blurry

Hmm best way, IMHO, is to make em in vector format. SVG format works so well for me.

Basically, once you're done, you can export a PNG file of any size, then using icon developer, convert it over to icon format.

Kona, download the fully functional, trail version of Paint Shop Pro 8.10. Try it out, you may decide to scrape up some dough for it in 30 days. It'll cost you less than $100, and it's a great skinning tool. It does Raster, and Vector (on the same image if you wish ) AND much easier to learn/use than the GIMP.

As Travis said, create your icons at 256x256, (and use transparent backgrounds).

i will do that koa. I found PSP 8 at costco for 49.99.

As for my existing icons, I took them down and will put them back up at 128 x 128. I sharpened them up.

I tested all of them on my dock, they look good.

256x256 is a waste, vector doesn't matter, and if psp makes you happy then power to you.

192x192 is the highest Object Dock will display and that is rarely if ever used, but you should make it at that size anyway, 256 is bigger than it can be displayed and so is a waste, and increases file size uselessly.

Doesn't matter if it's made in vector or by raster, but make sure if you make it rastered it's decently bigger than the file size so you have room to play, vector has plenty of limits but use what is needed, and what works for you.

If your able to I'd get photoshop before I'd waste money one paint shop pro, but depends what your doing, and if it's worth the money.

I already have photoshop on a disc but alas it is the mac version, along with illustator and a few other high end adobe products.

Let me try PSP 8 first.

Hey Kona! I'm making a set of OD icons with Fireworks, which is not cheap at all.

It does make good stuff though, all in png format. I like it alot, and it is now my main image editor, whenever I can get away with it. I hope you have good luck making those icons dude! If you need help with any major image editors like PSP or Photoshop or whatnot, jdcerebro@hotmail.com me and I'll do me best to help you out!

256x256 is certainly not a waste. When I, and others are making an OD type icon/png, we aren't making it for only OD. Other programs use the same type image, at 256.

PSP is not a waste of money, if you're looking a for a graphics editor for skinning. Photoshop for skinning is.... IMHO.  And you obviously have no idea how easy it is to do some things in Vector. PSP is less limiting in vector than some high end/high price proggies such as Illustrator. It's a lot more powerful than a lot people think.

I think PSP 5 is freely available on Magazine CDs....full version, not time limited.

IMHO even 5 is an ideal graphics proggy for most people.....other than those who are into Commercial work....

Mormegil creates all his icons in vector, and I don't think anyone would say his work is not detailed, but what do I know, you're the expert.

And yet you recommend he spend hundreds on Photoshop.

but if your going to tell me mormegils' icons are "easy" to make I'll call your bluff

I also said it depends what your doing and IF it's worth the money, and photoshop is undeniably worth every penny

As I said before, Kona, if you really want to do this, start making your own, simple icons. Then you won't need to sharpen or add glassy effects. Icons needn't be app-specific, and in my opinion the best ones aren't. The most useful icons for skinners are the ones we can plug in and use for a whole class of apps or tasks.

Sure, most people start out doing what you are doing, but at some point they all get really pissed, toss out all the crap they are trying to gild, and learn to do it from scratch themselves. Learn about icons, what goes into making them from scratch.

Don't expect to be back here the next day stunning people. About the time I think you have gone off to learn a bit you come back and start asking what to do again.
