BootSkins for all

BootSkins for all

Hi Everyone

It seems that there has been a lot of people who seem to be having problems creating bootskins correctly, below is the correct way to make them (until the Truecolour version comes out that is)

Use an existing .INI file and change all relevant sections, see below.

Graphics
1. Main Picture = Size 640x480 - 16 Colours (4 Bit)
2. Progressbar = Size 22x9 - 16 Colours (4 Bit) - Exactly the same palette as Main Pic
3. Both pictures have to be .BMP files

ProgressBar
Placement of Progressbar can be anywhere on the screen, but if you are going to have an outline for the progressbar then the following applies.

eg: Progressbar placed at 234z359, 190 Length (234 pixels across x 359 Pixels down and 190 Pixels long) then the outline should be as follows

TopLeft corner = 224x357 - TopRight Corner 426x357 - BottomLeft corner 224x368 - BottonRight corner 426x368

Please note that the PB Outline starts 10 pixels to the left of actual position.

The INI File All parts in bold are what should be changed to match your BootSkin.

[BootSkin]
Type=0
Name = "BootSkin Name"
Author = "Your Name"
Description = "BootSkin Description"
ProgressBar=ProgressBarFileName.bmp
ProgressBarX = 258
ProgressBarY = 22
ProgressBarWidth = 120
ProgressBarHeight = 9
Screen=MainFilename.bmp

I hope this helps, if you still have problems then please email me the file as a .zip and I will try to fixed any problems and email back the fixed skin along with a short description of the hiccup

You will need to remake the progress bar bitmap...it clearly has the wrong palette....it MUST be identical to the main image....NOT 'JUST' also 16 colours....THE COLOURS YOU USE MUST BE THE SAME ONES AS THE MAIN IMAGE.....no 'ifs', no 'buts'.

once more....THE SAME COLOURS USED...

I'm using skin studio, tried to send the progress bar to give it the same color as the image, and it changes it to a larger size. I've tried to resize it in psp, but to no avail. If I used SkinStudio to make the Colors for the main image, how do I make the PB the same way without it changing to a larger size?

Meyend Tripp....in PSP just open the background image [640x480 16 colour] and simply copy/paste as new image, save as 'progress.bmp'....it'll be the same palette, naturally.....then change the Image/Canvas Size to 22x9 and save again.

Colour-pick from the main background image to 'draw' the detail in the Progress.bmp and save.

Done...

Jserphos, you cannot do that without extracting the necessary .bmp's from the ntoskrnl, it would be easier to make a new one of your own

Not easy, you may need to use a hacking program, like "ResHacker"

I've never tried it, so be very careful

Personally, I wouldn't try hacking any files, could be dangerous

I personally use Paint Shop Pro to create the images then I copy and alter an existing INI file

Jserphos....language....

Do not modify your ntoskrnl...not unless you are willing to accept the potential dire consequences.

You are talking about hacking your actual OS....violates the Microsoft EULA and can be 'fatal'.

Stick with safe methods as used here....

I can't agree more.

Alright, I've been trying all day. Everything looks fine until the progress bar pops up. Then, as stated above "all hell breaks loose". I've checked the pallets over and over again, they are the same. I saved my background pallet of 16 colors and used that to save the progress bar.

What software do you all use? I'm working with PhotoShop and ImageReady (create in PS, move to IR to optimize GIF/limit colors). I then have tried converting to BMP in the following ways: PhotoShop, Paint, and IrfanView. All have the same end result of messing everything up. Help? Please?

hitop.....best way to make a progress bar is to create the background image.....save it in 16 colours bitmap, copy paste to create a new image the same and reduce its size to 22x9 pixels, save that and rename as 'progress.bmp' [whatever] and then edit it without altering palette  'resolution'.

In Paintshop Pro this is dead simple to do and drama free....

What's the deal with some of the bootskins I've made showing up wrong when booting up? They're the right size and resolution and colours, etc but when they're actually working on the bootscreen, part of the bottom of the image is cut off as though the image was actually larger in height than the screen.
I've had ti happen with a couple of my latest ones and I've seen it also on some I've downloaded from WC.

Any ideas?
