Terror Star Text Issue

I just built my first Terror Star and as I was reading the description, I was curious to know what "war fairing weaponry" is.  Please ask your new English Major to take a look at this one.

There is also a bit of a functionality issue with the Terror Star:

  1. The Terror Star only has a range of 4.5 cells.
  2. You cannot construct a starbase (Terror Star) in another player's Zone of Control.

You either need to give the Terror Star a MUCH longer range or you need to allow the Terror Star to be built in another player's Zone of Control.  Otherwise, you will only be able to use it to blow-up solar systems that you already own.

Thank you Paul, I see what you're saying, if you get the big boom stick, you want to be sure you can use it apropriately.

Another property of the Terror Star that I hadn't realized existed was that it can move 3 cells per turn.  This means that it can be constructed in your own ZOC and then moved to the star that you want to destroy.

Given that nothing else that a constructor can build can move, the fact that the Terror Star can move is not intuitive. Also, the fact that it can only move 3 cells per turn means that it is not going to be a very useful (even if interesting) weapon since it will take so long to get it into position.

The original in GC2 I believe it was only moved 1 hex a turn and from discussions on Discord this speed limit is designed so you cannot go zipping through the Galaxy destroying Stars.

A very sensible design choice in my opinion.

Remember the AIs can build these also and likely outbuild you.

Do believe it might end up being better if Terror Stars are an option not a hard feature.

One thing I see happening is more players disallowing trade.

I am one of the people that has disabled tech trading and doesn't do resource trading for a few reasons:

  1. A.I. civilizations propose ridiculous trades which are a waste of time.
  2. It is too cumbersome to find a civilization that has something you want and then go through the frustrating process of trying to make a deal.
  3. The A.I. civilizations seem to trade techs with each other effectively speeding-up their research.

The trading process needs to be modified so that players can easily see the highest bid and lowest ask prices for each resource and each technology from all civilizations that you have met.  I am thinking of something similar to the Galactic Bazaar which shows the buy and sell price for the resources that it offers.  Just add the civilizations that are offering the best prices.

The same can be said of ALL weapons.  The issue in my mind is trying to determine as a player whether the Terror Star is worth building or not.  As it currently exists, the Terror Star is an interesting, but useless, weapon.

By the time you get Terror Star tech they aren't useful. You have to build them in your space, they only move three spaces a turn and it takes three or four turns from when it's in position to make a star blow up real good. Also, there were no promised asteroids after the nova. I see above that they also have a range of 4.5? I'm not sure what that means, but that might even make them less useful. These things are not tear-assing around the galaxy blowing stuff up.

As a precaution I added a couple of escorts. No AI civ attacked it, so I don't know how that would have gone down. They don't appear to have any inherent defense capability. You'd think the AI civs might be slightly afraid if they saw one of these things in their neighborhood.

As for the AI using them, I'd love to see it. I've always been way ahead in tech by that stage.

Cheers,

CB
