Start11 + "Windows 10" start menu crash when picking custom tile image

I'm hoping that you guys can address this crash.  I'm able to reproduce it consistently.

  • Start11 with "Windows 10" style Start Menu.
  • With some tiles pinned, right-click one of them and select "Icon -> Pick custom tile image..."
    • A "Browse" window appears to pick an image to display, however, the right-click menus do not disappear.  They are still open with basically two different menus, the "top-level menu" which has "Unpin", "Resize", "Color", etc., and "Icon ->" submenu which has "Pick a custom tile image...", "Hide caption", etc..
  • Move the mouse over one of the other top-level menu options ("Unpin", "Resize", Color", etc.), so that the "Icon ->" submenu disappears.  (This is pretty easy to do by accident while moving the cursor over to the "Browse" window to pick an image file.)
  • Now, pick any image file from the "Browse" window.
  • Start11 has crashed.  Not only that, but the image that was chosen for the tile was not applied.
    • It seems that Start11 recovers quickly and automatically, but it involves killing and restarting explorer.exe, which is annoying because it causes some system tray icons to get lost...

In order to get around this crash, you have to be very careful with the mouse movement so that the "Icon ->" submenu stays open while you are picking an image.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need to know:

  1. You on Windows 10 or 11? And also need to know its full version number. Use Winver.exe to get it.
  2. Your Start11 version.

Thanks

This particular crash was resolved.

Could you uninstall Start11, reboot and then reinstall 1.36 to ensure all files were correctly replaced please.

Uninstall & reinstall did fix it, thanks.

This is the second time recently that not all files seemed to be put in place properly during an upgrade.  I normally upgrade using the "Check for updates" function inside of Start11.  Should I download the new installer from the web site every time instead ...?

When you have issue after an upgrade, it is best to uninstall and download directly from your product account page. And install that one.

Did it ask for a reboot after installing before?

I honestly don't recall, but I know that Start11 tends to ask for a reboot after a patch so I only do updates to Start11 at times when I'm about to reboot anyway.  I'm sure that I rebooted after installing the update whether it asked me to or not.
