Fences crash report

Hi,
I have been unable to create fences, apart from the ones self generated upon installation.
Each time I try and create a new fence WinDBG pops up with a crash report. I copy the link to one of those below.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rpUbueeMstcb5jhgiVu27dQ4Vod30u5M/view?usp=sharing

My PC runs Windows 10 Pro, Version 21H2, OS build 19044.1766
I do have admin rights and whilst the crashes happen the ready made fences stay on.

Kind regards,

Roland

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Please try purge and reinstall steps as mention here : [Link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account page. Reboot after the purge. Reinstall and reboot again after the installation. Retest and report back here.

Thank you,

Hi Basj,
I have done all the above. In fact I had done it before installing WinDBG. (that included running the purging batch file.)
That made no difference.
Also the lock fence option is deselected.

I just tried a clean boot with just fences enabled and I still get the crash every time I try to create a fence, or say move a file out of a pre made fence.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

If you install the current Beta, do you still see the issue?

Hi Sean,
I just tried and the crash still happens every time I try to create fences or interact with an element within the ready made fences.

In your Fences install directory:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\Fences

Unzip and drop this file in there:

https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/SdDisplay.exe.zip

Reboot and see if you still see the issue.

Thanks and let us know asap, please.

Hi Sean,
I have tried and Windows will not allow it as the file it replaces is used by another application.
I tried booting in safe mode with fences disabled in the startup and it still happens.
Would you have any suggestion?
Kind regards,
Roland

In Taskmanager\Startup, stop Fences from starting up 1st:

Reboot, replace, change them to 'Enabled' again, reboot.

Hi Sean,
I have tried this and still get the error.
So I know fences gets started even with the two disabled options as you described. I can see the ready made fences on the desktop.
There must be something else loading it.

Try:

Reboot.

If that fails, go to:

C:\ProgramData\Stardock\Fences4

Note that is ProgramData, not ProgramFiles.  It may be hidden for you but it can be shown.

Deleting those files will have the app in a deactivated state (on the PC, not here).  With a reboot, it will likely prompt you to activate - dont until you replace the file.

Ok, lets try this... Here is a batch file that will unlock some stuff in Fences.  You should get a message like this when run:

https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/UnlockFences.zip

Then try to replace the file with the one I gave you.

Thanks for the effort and patience.

Hi Sean,
Sorry for the interruption, I was away for a while.
So that worked, which is great. Thanks very much for persisting.
What will happen when there is an update to Fences?

Safe these and how you have it to Work. If you want to change a .exe you have ALWAYS in Task Manager to STOP IT Manually!!

Then you MUST delete the .exe and then you can replace it with the New one.
