Closing Laptop lid Multiplicity stops working

Hey All,

So my laptop is configured so that when it is plugged in and charging I can close the lid and nothing will happen.

However Multiplicity seems to be ignoring this, if I close the lid the KVM window stops responding and only starts responding again when the lid is open. Yesterday as a test it also had the unfortunate effect of stopping the keyboard from working and I had to reboot to get that working.

Is there any way to have the laptop lid closed and Multiplicity still working?

This is not an MP thing but a Windows one.  MP sends to the Primary what it 'sees' from the Secondary.  If there is nothing, nothing is sent.  Windows will often power down a GPU\Display when the lid is closed as a power-saving measure.  While you say its configured to 'do nothing', something is indeed changing.

Thank you for the reply. Reworked my desktop are so the laptop is out of sight. Pity there does not seem to be a way of turning off the secondary display while connected.

No, sadly not. As soon as you connect to the device through MP the screen wakes up. It's not the end of the world, like I said I just rearranged my desk so that the laptop is off to the side and out of site. Was a tad annoying seeing what I am doing through MP also happening on the laptop screen.

I am trialing multiplicity as an option for my work/home setup to switch between my gaming rig (primary) and my work laptop(secondary). Hard to find a hardware solution that supports 1440p 144hz G-Sync DisplayPort that doesn't cost a kidney.

I found this thread, as I ran into the same problem. My current workaround is a usb-c dock with HDMI also connected to my monitor. This allows the laptop to provide video to my monitor, at 1440p resolution, without it being viewed by the monitor thus keeping the laptop video alive even with the lid shut.

I'm also using this dock for my USB busy light since I don't need that on my gaming rig. Another benefit of the dock is the network card. I have the ethernet NIC from it connected to my 2nd NIC in my gaming rig, set up as a private crossover just for multiplicity. Near zero latency, full gigabit bandwidth, and it doesn't interfere with my company VPN connected via wifi.

Only feature I would like is the ability to share all USB devices connected to the primary with the secondary. I use my webcam on both devices, usually handling switching with an A/B usb switch. If I can find a solution for this, I would gladly purchase the full version. Until then I'll manage with changing inputs on my monitor and clicking the button on my usb switch. 

 

If you're tech-savvy you may also want to take a peek at Apache Guacamole™

I use it for all of my VMs and misc headless machines. Not sure how well it works with laptops with the lids closed, but may be worth investigating.

I have found a solution for this! Tested and verified!
Activating a Secondary Display on Windows 10 when no Monitor is Connected - Amyuni Technologies

 

Installing this virtual display driver does the trick. Two command lines to run in powershell or CMD as administrator.

One to install the display driver, the second to enable it. 

I set it to 'extend display' so I could set the virtual driver to 1440p. Somehow the mouse doesn't even roll-over to it which is great.

Now when I close the laptop lid, the built-in display disappears, but the virtual display stays at the target resolution and becomes primary.

I'm not sure how well this would work for multi-monitor setups. I'll find out when I dock my laptop at work which has two 1080p displays.

This is VERY interesting to us, kottokmotors. I can't tell you how much we appreciate you making us aware of it.  Check that, yes I can - I have added a 1-year Object Desktop license to your account.

What is even more interesting is their licensing appears to be rather liberal - meaning, we could find a way to include it with MP at some point.
