Crash looping since new version

Hi, i'm using a corporate PC, i've been using fences 3 for a long time but then one of fence started to crash my explorer as soon as I unrolled it, so I uninstalled it so I can do a fresh install and then downloaded fences 4 but now it won't even launch, it crashes in loop everytime it tries to launch.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Do you have DisplayFusion installed in your system?

Thanks

Hi I'm having almost the exact same issue. I believe in my case it is being caused by a Folder Portal sorted by "type". The moment fences tries to reload it (the first time is fine), the application and windows explorer immediately crashes with the same error message. As it tries to load the Folder Portal on startup and immediately crashes, I'm completely unable to access it from that point onwards.

I do NOT have DisplayFusion so this is unrelated to the existing thread regarding that issue.

Please fix this ASAP.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need to know more on your system

  1. Windows version, 10 or 11? And you can use Winver.exe to get Windows full version numbers.
  2. Fences version.
  3. Does it happen to any folder portal or only on folder portal on a network drive or cloud drive?
  4. Does the problem stop when you remove that Folder portal.

Thanks.

  1. Windows 10 Ver 21H1 (OS Build 19043.1415)
  2. Latest version of Fences 4. Redownloaded from website and still experiencing the same issue.
  3. It happens on any folder portal. I've been using fences for a long time but yesterday was the first time I have tried rightclick > sorting the folder portal, upon which on restart I begin to experience fences crashing on startup and crashing windows explorer with it.
  4. Yes, the problem stops when I remove the folder portal. Which requires a complete reinstall of Fences. This is quite possibly the worst possible user experience I have ever had with an application.

I am sorry, but I can't recreate your issue on my system. If possible please post a video on your issue. Also Please, try purge and reinstall steps as mentioned here: [link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account. Reboot after the purged. Reinstall, and Reboot again after the installation. Retest it. Report back here.

Hi Basj,

Thanks for following up. I am unable to provide a video, but I can repeat my steps exactly that produces the problem on my PC.

  1. Purge fences entirely as instructed by your link.
  2. Reboot.
  3. Reinstall fences.
  4. Reboot.
  5. Create folder portal to the "Downloads" folder as defined by Windows.
  6. Right click within the folder portal > sort by "type".
    1. at this stage, rebooting will trigger (9) as well.
  7. Open up any subfolder to change the directory within the folder portal.
  8. Click the return arrow to go back to the "Downloads" directory.
  9. Fences then crashes. Trying to start it up again consistently "Error: 'Fences has detected that Explorer was not closed properly' ".

Please try these steps and see if you can reproduce the issue. In testing this I have done this a total of 5 times can reproduce the problem every single time.

Did you do the purge steps as mentioned above? If not please do, once done that, please reinstall. And upon load please choose for Fences to create fences for you. Do not load any of your saved Fences.

Try uninstall Fences 4, but this time don't save the setting. Reboot and reinstall again.
