copy-paste shortcut doesn't work

When I copy a shortcut and paste it into an existing fence, for an instant it appears in the fence but then it simply pastes the shortcut onto the desktop, not in the fence. I'm running the version 4 beta.

TIA for you help.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having issues.

When you copy and paste it will go to the desktop

then just move it to the proper Fence ,

I did  cut-and-paste,  copy-and-paste,  drag-and-drop. Same behavior on all three (what I describe in my initial posting here.) The behavior is as if Fences isn't installed. Or isn't started. ???

Thanks.

This may be happening because Startdock doesn't think I've paid for the product. See https://forums.stardock.com/504736/many-shortcut-missing. I suppose I can just uninstall and re-install, but that would probably sendme back through the same type of problem I'm already having. Truth is, this open issue is really only causing me to not be able to see one shortcut inside the fence; I can't  can always look for it on the other side of the desktop.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. But, from what I read you're trying to cut and paste into a Fences. I believe that is not how Fences work. If you want that shortcut appear in a Fences of your choice. You will need cut and paste it into Desktop and than you need move it into your Fences. 2 Steps. The second steps can be made automatically, but you will need to setup a Fences rules to do so. for example. "All document files move to selected Fences" etc.

As a side note : Stardock only do Technical support via Forum. Only purchase/refund/account issue will be entertain via Support Ticket.

CUT-AND-PASTE DOESN'T FIX IT
Cut-and-paste won't work because it tries to paste it with the same name and it doesn't let you changes the target name. The 2 options are SKIP and CANCEL.

The program that I'm trying to create a shortcut for isn't in the Program Files or Program Files (x86) so creating the shortcut in the first place is not straightforward. I'd rather not spend my time doing that again. Instead, I did several copies and renames to a temporary file to get the shortcut onto the desktop "folder" as you instructed.

So, it's on the desktop. The copy-paste into the fence still fails.

WHY CUT-AND-PASTE?
Perhaps you'd like to explain why cut-and-paste to the desktop is supposed to make a difference; I'd feel a bit less frustrated by all of this I've had to go through and it still fails.

WHY IS THIS NOT CONSIDERED A BUG?
In any event I'm still unable to get the shortcut into a fence. And Idon't see how I'll EVER be able to put a shortcut into a fence. And I don't see how this is not regarded as a bug, since I was able to do it before installing version 4.

EXPLAIN STEP 2

I will do the step 2 "All document files move to selected Fences" etc." after you explain: 1.Where do I go to define rule? 2. What does this particular rule do? I mean, we aren't moving files to fences, we're moving shortcuts, right?

As I mentioned before that is not how Fences currently work. You can ask for feature request for it.

Open up The "Sorting & organizing" tab in fences 4 and you will get a lot of options in there. You will need to try it out. After that is set, any new icons/program land on your Desktop will be place automatically to specific fence of your choice according to your setup rules.

I clicked the link icon above and filled in the URL. This URL

https://www.dropbox.com/s/9698nsyfprfiev1/fences%20stardock%20unable%20to%20copy-paste%20shortcut%286%29.jpg?dl=0.

So where is the image? How to get it to show up here?

So you click the link icon in the menu (above), enter it into the forum form, but then you have to also paste it here?

OK, I don't get it but that's what I'll do. This has nothing to do with the topic being discussed "copy-paste shortcut..." except that I want to put an image in my reply to the topic.

@Basj

Yes, the Organize options are what we want. You didn't explain how to get to them, so here is how:

STEPS TO NAVIGATE TO CONFIGURE, ORGANIZE OPTIONS

* right-click inside the open space between shortcuts inside a fence Image below
* click Sort by
* click Organize
* choose the desired "send new..." options
NOTE that the "send new..." refer to "files". You are actually sending shorcuts, not files.

RIGHT CLICK

EMPTY SPACE

ORGANIZE

STEPS

Basj, Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I still think this should be recognized as a bug. I was able to copy into a fence without going through the extra steps, before I installed version 4.

I am really sorry, I tried on my Fences 3, and to my surprise it indeed work on that one. Copy paste, and it just paste into that Fence. No issue. Move back to my Fences 4 and I retry it. Not sure why it work this time too. So, it might be something. When I test it before it don't work. Maybe the reboot helps. I am not sure. Try rebooting your system. And do report back.

Your advice to use the Organize led to the solution. Reboot wasn't necessary. I consider the issue resolved.

My only remaining concern was/is about recognizing it as a bug in version 4. Is there a defined process to report a bug?

Again, thanks for your help.
