I had this scare as well.

Deactivate explorer patcher by adding an "o" to the end of the dll's name and restart explorer. Start 11 will work again but not explorer patcher

I am pretty sure explorer patcher breaks every single windows 11 update and needs a new dll made monthly. Also, dlls are not made at all for beta or dev builds. So that is kind of a pain.

At least start 11 v1.1 is around the corner.

Start11 should not be impacted by OS updates, but yes explorer patcher may well be.

oh its 100 percent totally understandable. I just figured I'd let people know.

This isn't some kind of fault of Start11 or ExplorerPatcher - jsut the way it is :)

I have edited your post as it implies Start11 is broken by the update and I do not believe this to be the case.

I understand that but start11 WILL stop working if you install the update and you have to alter it in order for it to do otherwise. The instructions are in this thread, but it WILL break start11.

The only thing I see reported is you reporting this and someone else reporting that they had to disable explorer patcher by renaming it but nothing to do with Start11.

What needs altering with Start11 in order to make it work?

ahh so it seems start11 and explorer patcher are conflicting? Either way the update AND the conflict then break start11 and it's helpful for people to see this, imo

Thats not changing Start11, thats disabling explorer patcher by renaming the dxgi.dll file you put in the Windows directory.  Nothing to do with Start11 at all.

right, but start11 does cease to function, even after a reinstall, upon this update!

I just checked here and it seems to be working just fine here.

Explorer patcher appears to have a problem, not Start11.

Remove that and everything should be fine.

If explorer patcher is installed and partially working only then Start11 may detect the OS is Win10 which could have unexpected consequences, but that would be due to explorer patcher breaking things not Start11.

So what happens with the update is that explorer patcher breaks but keeps running its broken dll. With the broken dll running then start 11 will not run. When you rename the dxgi.dll to dxgio.dll and restart explorer then start 11 runs fine again.

If you try out explorerpatcher it is important you know what you are getting yourself into. It is extremely important you know how to deactivate it as it breaks with every single windows update by design.

I think the point Neil is trying to make is that start 11 is fully able to handle every windows update so far unlike explorerpatcher and this will be a huge selling point of start 11 v1.1

ahh that makes sense!!! I think still, the title should then say Start11 breaks if you update AND have explorer patcher installed

How about... if you update windows 11 with explorerpatcher installed it may cause you to have a heart attack.

Nothing worse then seeing your freshly updated windows not running anything on start up XO

Start 11 doesnt exactly break, but yeah that boot up experience does suck.

there you go. But, their board their rules.  no real fight here :)

No, the cause and effect is....Explorer Patcher breaks...and affects other functionality, including Start 11.

The reality is...Start 11 does NOT break, as the KB update does not affect Start 11 at all...;)

It's not appropriate to indicate there is a fault with Start 11 when it's actually another program that is affected....;)

Right, but if the two are installed...

Thats all I'm saying now, might be good to edit the title.

:)

Also, whether it's inappropriate or not isn't really relevant, the mods can make that determination.

:)

So basically, if you have explorer patcher installed AND update, it breaks start 11..

Better?

No.

If you have explorer patcher installed AND update, it breaks explorer patcher.

If you have Start 11 installed AND you update, nothing happens to Start 11.

If you have explorer patcher AND Start 11 installed AND you update, it breaks explorer patcher which also takes out Start 11.

Solution....uninstall explorer patcher until such time as THAT is corrected.

As for 'inappropriate' and/or 'relevant', that's actually my responsibility as site Administrator...;)

It is now safe to update your pc. Explorer patcher has released a new version that is stable for Windows 11 version 2200.346. It is also 100 compatible with start 11 so everything should work now.

However, it's a safe bet that Win 11 will change yet again and break things once more.  It's why you should never 'early adopt' unless you have an actual need to...;)

Very true. For all that the latest release broke, I can't actually see any of the actual benefits of it because they are just small fixes... I think it is time to turn the insider preview off at this rate. Anything to be at all excitied about when it comes to the future of Windows 11 seems to be coming from stardock at this point in time anyways.

Good plan.

Once upon a time people would dive into alphas and betas in the full understanding that results could be 'entertaining' at best.  When things broke you'd just say 'that was fun'...and eventually things wouldn't break quite as often, and you'd stick with the new OS.

These days any old twit installs whatever is new because everyone just KNOWS 'new is better' and when [not if] things break they demand you fix it NOW or they'll have your balls.

I still remember watching an early Windows ME choke itself to death as I watched...in real-time.  Didn't take long....was an early system-restore/backup feature...the OS got into a loop...kept on making restore points until the harddrive filled up solid and the system locked up due to lack of headroom....strangled swap file and all.

Early OS vers are pretty much guaranteed to go bad.  Murphy's Law says they will.  Sod's Law says it'll only affect you personally...;)
