Is it possible to increase the Start 11 rendering rate?

It looks like Start 11 renders at 60fps, which is not surprising. However this causes it to look a little jerky on high refresh rate monitors at opposed to other Windows animations which run at the native frame rate. Is there any way to increase the rate it renders at? If not, this is something you may wish to consider adding as high refresh rate monitors continue to become a more popular item for people.

Which animations in particular are you finding slow?

The animations run internally at the refresh rate of your primary monitor.

In particular what I notice is when I click on the menu button to have it pop up. It looks choppy compared to the native start menu which looks really smooth. I haven't done a video capture or anything so I don't know for sure the actual rates of both. However the Start 11 menu looks like it is moving more at 60 fps, where the Windows 11 native menu is very smooth as things tend to look at 240 fps (monitor native).

It's not a big deal, but something I do enjoy about Windows 11 is the nice smooth animations when given a fast display.

Came here to say this too--glad I'm not the only one.

I have a 60Hz monitor and I can assure you the animations are not running at 60 FPS. More like 20. It's a small thing, but it makes the whole product feel cheap.

On Windows 10 using the Windows 10-style start in fullscreen. Maybe an odd use-case, but I like the aesthetics more than default Windows 10. The animation framerate is just such a turnoff I may go back to default until it's fixed.

You can disable the animations if you wish for now in Start11 settings.

What resolution are you running and what cpu are you using?

Does it run smoother if the menu is not set to full screen?

I've got an Intel i5 10600K, RTX 2060, 32GB of RAM, and an NVMe SSD. Running at 4K, but even so, my system performance isn't the issue.

Oddly enough, I just noticed that switching pages within the start menu animates at full rate. Everything else, like opening/closing the menu, right-click menu animations, etc, all run at a way lower rate. The rate stays the same regardless of settings—fullscreen/standard, 7/10/11 styles, different search engines, etc. all behave the same. It doesn't feel like lag. It's consistent, just consistently 20 FPS or so.

Hi everyone...

I've been testing out Start11 (great app by the way!), but there is indeed an issue with the FPS of the animations in the start menu, especifically with the open/close anim.

I have 2 monitors.... the main one run at 144hz and the second one runs at 60hz; in both the animation seems off, really janky... is like there is no vSync applied.

Hi.

I feel the same choppiness, hardly though, when opening Start Menu of Start11 on Windows 10 ( middle position ). It is not an annoyance but I confirm the issue in an attempt to make the product better for future updates.

Start Menu on Windows 11 without Start11 opens very smoothly. It's just like gliding frictionlessly in the air.

By the way, my monitor works at 60 Hz.

Regards

Same here. Here is a screen recording of what it looks like on mine. I am running:

AMD 2600X, 16GB RAM, GTX1060 6GB

2 x 2560x1440 and 1 x 1080p Monitors

That almost looks like it's opening too fast and that's causing the issue...;)

Yeah, as someone with this issue, that video doesn't demonstrate it very clearly at all.

It's much easier to see by A/B testing Start 11 versus stock. I'll try to record examples at full and half speed to better highlight what I'm seeing.

EDIT: Video, as promised: https://file.coffee/u/T2kERXCZ4f9-KG.mp4

It should be easy enough to see the difference at full speed, but watch to the end for 25% speed and you can really see just how few frames Start 11 is drawing versus OG start. This is at 60 FPS, so I can only imagine it's more stark for high refresh rate users.

I have a 165Hz monitor and a pretty high-end system (Ryzen 5900X, RTX 3080) and I have noticed this issue as well.  The menu animation of Start 11 is definitely 60 FPS or maybe even less.  People with traditional 60Hz monitors are probably not going to notice or care about this issue because they are accustomed to 60Hz.  The first time I saw Windows running at a high refresh rate was glorious. ;-)  As we see in this thread, people who are used to the smooth animation/mouse pointer movement of 120Hz+ are noticing the janky animation of Start 11.

If I set my monitor's refresh rate to 60Hz, the default Windows menu animation and the Start 11 menu animation look pretty much the same; they both have that slightly jittery 60Hz "look". If I set my refresh rate to 165Hz, the default Windows menu animation becomes buttery smooth but the Start 11 menu animation still has the look of 60 FPS.  This is occurring with all 4 menu styles (Modern, Windows 7, etc).

We have an update in development which should address the lower than expected frame rate on some computers.

The 1.01 update is now available as a beta which you can download from your products page on the stardock store.

This should noticeably improve the frame rate on animations.

Just tried the new 1.01 beta and for me the frame rate got fixed! Now it's as smooth as the native Win11 menu.

Thanks!
