Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Please try purge and reinstall steps as mentioned here: https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling. Just make sure to re-download the latest version from your account. Reboot after the purged. Reinstall, and Reboot again after the installation. Retest it. Report back here.

Thank you,

Will that procedure erase the stored layouts?

did as instructed on the original machinre, aka Berinie6new, ran the uninstall util, installed latest Fences,  but wouldn't restore correctly. So I restored a full image backup.

Now I'm trying to copy the icons and fences to a different machine, aka Corsair. Same 2 monitors, display card same resolution but instead of Nvidia 2080 it's a 3080.

On source machine, aka Bernie6new  made a snapshot and put a copy of the backup folder on OneDrive.

installed Fences to new machine, Corsair.  Copied the entire fences backup folder from OneDRive to overwrite that folder on the new machine, Corsair.

On new machine, selected the correct snapshot to restore.

It did not restore completely.  On one monitor it was mostly complete. On other the titles came over but that's all.\

While some of the icons would have pointed to applications that might not exist on the new machine, most of them were web documents pointing to web sites. Same default browser on bother machine, Edge.

I had DisplayFusion turned off on both machines the whole time.

I believe, since you copy over just the layout snapshot, it will work on some shortcut but not all. Since in different machine the location of those shortcut might be in different location on your new system. Unless both system have same system layout (drive name, folder location etc) it won't full work. Those layout snapshot is for the system its currently in. It does not save the files itself. It just save its location of the files.

i'm not expecting icons doc shortcuts to local apps or docs which don't exist in the identical paths on new machine would work but would expect them to show up as white/blanks.

Most of the icons were HTML docs with normal URLs. very few of them came over.

since Fences 3 wouldn't even restore properly on the original machine, i'd think it wouldn't export ok either

On thing seems to be being missed here; Fences will not create icons.  A snapshot restore will create the fences, and put icons in them, but only if they exist already.

OK, I shouldn't expect icons shortcuts to local apps or docs which don't exist in the identical paths on new machine would even get restored.

But shouldn't the icons that were HTML docs with normal URLs have come over to new pc if I do a clean install of Fences on the target machine, exit Fences. Then copy the Fences backup folder from the source machine to the same location on the new machine? I see the old snapshots but nothing happens when I try to restore.

Maybe an issue because of my business preview build of Win 10?

AV and Anti malware is disabled other than maybe MS Defender.

Different question: if i install Display Fusion on Win 10 business preview build, is it likely to cause problems saving and restoring using Fences?

Restore = Create.  Fences will not create anything but the Fences it is responsible for.

What might achieve what you are looking for is to have OneDrive actually manage your Desktop - to 'sync' it:

When on the 'new PC', and after setting up sync again, the icons would be 'restored' as they were on the old.

Ah, apparently that synching via business one drive is what I stumbled onto without trying because several days ago every document and icon from every desktop for same windows/365 user started synching.

1. That's ok but how did I enable that function?

2. Will that make it maybe possible to restore Fences layout to different workstations by copying the Fences backup with desired layout snapshot to the target machine?

3. maybe unrelated question: if I want to remove all fences I've created for a pc to start fresh, do I have to uninstall? I tried disabling and reenabling wo success. Specifically these were fences created by one of your defaults that I applied

Hello, lenraphael

If you right-click on your desktop to View

then scroll down to Lock Fences if checked

un check it ( that un locks fences ) then on the

top right hand corner of each fence is an ( X )

just click on that X to delete that fence .

OneDrive? You will have to work on that on your own I am afraid...

It's something you are going to have to experiment with.  Again, Fences will only group icons, not create them.

For any test:

You would create a basic desktop icon set  - mostly all Windows native icons (notepad, explorer, etc - and a few of your own. Make sure that desktop is sync'd with OneDrive, and create a Fences snapshot.

Sync a new desktop so that it is identical to the one created, install Fences and restore that (manually moved) snapshot from the 1st PC:
