Pinned items GONE

A few hours ago, all of my pinned programs were replaced by recently opened image files.  I had been running Start8.  Purchased and installed Start10--no fix. When I click on "all programs', they display as before.  When I click back, it displays those same image files (which open as expected).  I have a full system backup from last night.  Where can I find my previously pinned files??

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Not really sure when you mentioned "I had been running Start8", so the issue appear while you still using Windows 8? Please clarify and elaborate.

Thanks.

I've been using Start8 with Win 10 all along.  The issue appeared in Start8.  I upgraded to Start10 in hopes that it would correct the problem, but it did not.  Thanks.

Also, when I attempt to "pin to Start", the item does not appear.  And when I attempt to "unpin from Start menu", another image file takes it's place.

I am not sure if Start8 pinned item will be carried over to Start10 when you upgrade. But, I have forward your problem/question to Stardock Support Team for their assistance. Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We appreciate your feedback and patience.

To clarify, the incorrect items WERE carried over to Start10 when I upgraded.

One interesting issue is that after I installed Start10 and rebooted, the Start8 icon appeared.  I uninstalled Start8 and reinstalled Start10.  The incorrect pinned items never changed.

Thanks for bumping my problem up.

On Start10, When it don't have pinned items to show it will automatically show most recent open application. If it have Pinned items to Start10, it will show that first and push the most recent open application down.

Can't you manually pinned all those items again?

In Start10 you need to "Pin to Start Menu (Start10)" not "Pin to Start" to make it appear on the Left panel of Start10. On the screenshot below, right click on recent items and select on "Pin to Start menu (Start10).

I don't have that option on recent items, and on desktop icons, I only have "pin to start".

Perhaps my installation is corrupt.  I will uninstall and reinstall Start 10.

Thanks for working on this with me.

Please try purge and reinstall steps as mentioned here: https://forums.stardock.com/486022/start10-support-faq#reinstalling Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account. Reboot after the purged. Reinstall, and Reboot again after the installation. Retest it. Report back here.

After purge and reinstall, the appearance is changed, but the content is unchanged.

Thanks.

Not really sure on you last comment. Is it still not solved?

It is not solved.  The purge removed my appearance options, but not the content.  So when I rebooted, it looked different, but the list was the same.

Yes, it does.  But when I select that, it does not appear in the list.

Hello,

Which list are you referring? It is best, if you could post a video so we can understand it much easier. Capture a video, upload it to any file/video sharing site and post a link here.

The list is the list of items pinned to Start10, the same one I have been referring to all along, the one that is populated with irrelevant files.

I am not comfortable posting a video of my system.

Perhaps I am using the wrong terminology.  When I refer to list, I mean the main Start10 menu.  As you can see below, it is populated with jpgs rather than my pinned programs and files.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.

If you right click on those pinned items and select properties where are they located?

If you go to C:\Users\<YOURUSERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu what do you see?

Thats where pinned items are stored.

THAT'S what I was looking for, Neil.  I found 176 items.  When I deleted all of the image files, my list was back to normal.

Problem solved.  Thanks!

Any idea how they might have wound up there?

They were files that I was copying from CDs using Multi Commander., along with thousands of others.

Not sure, thats a strange location for files to end up in by mistake.
