blaster worm virus...............

Coupled together with Grayhaze's thread the above worm virus seems to be really taking a hold..........today i was installing a new computer at a friends and i had to connect to the internet for a few minutes to sort out his internet connection and in that very short time this damn worm invaded the computer i was working on. I had loaded the NAV and was just about to update all the NAV definitions when i realised i had been invaded. As usual Symantec came to the rescue with a removal tool so thankfully all is now OK. Then low and behold i was talking on the phone to another friend and he tells me he was invaded by the worm yesterday. And finally the wife of my friend arrives home and tells me that one of her friends has been invaded too.

As Grayhaze says..........keep your anti-virus software up-to-date

A bit more info: blocked a ping (ICMP echo request) sent to your computer by a machine at IP address 64.91.41.121. A ping is a ICMP protocol message that is used to check whether a computer, identified by its IP address, is actually connected at a given time.

Desktop Firewall policies will prevent Nachi from spreading, by blocking the ICMP request used by the virus to find other vulnerable systems and blocking the TFTP traffic generated by infected systems.

What virus protectionis the best? I have the shareware version of norton right now. Not sure which to purchase. Which is best for the worm.

I've posted a news story with links for removal of the virus, which I want everyone (no exceptions!) to read and act on immediately. Read it here: https://www.wincustomize.com/newsBoard.asp?ID=1876

I'm sorry to be unsympathetic but these viruses spread by people not doing what they should. Anyone who doesn't install the latest security updates, have good anti-virus software and firewall should know what to expect. These events don't effect me or my Company and nor should they if I'm doing my job right. Viruses don't just spread to victims, they spread because of them...

Fuzzy, a virus such as the Sobig virus affects everyone, regardless of whether they're fully protected. The ones who suffer most are the ones on the receiving end of the bombardment of e-mails coming from infected machines. It's therefore important to get the message across to as many people as possible, as it's simply not enough to just protect yourself.

If you aren't receiving any of these e-mails yet then you're very lucky. You shouldn't get too complacent though, as this only started to affect me this morning and I've had hundreds of these mails since. It can happen to any of us at any time.

This post is directed to all users.

Since I have been online today for 5.5 hours, I have had 320 access attempts to infect me with a virus or that worm thing.
Because I chose long ago to take precautions and remain vigilant with my Patching and Anti-Virus updating, being careful with my Email address, and refusing to keep am address book on my computer, I have never been infected nor has anyone been infected by me.
It's all easy and very simple to guard against this stuff, not only for your own peace of mind and security, but out of respect for other peoples property.
I would hate to get infected by a virus or worm, so I know how I would feel about infecting another through negligence and utter lack of regard.
There are a number of GOOD free Anti-Virus apps available, like AVG, or Zone Alarm, and some others that will do a really good job.
Bottom line: Take care of your end, keep it clean and protected.

I got hit on my work machine- I had all the updates installed (on XP) Norton running full tilt and I'm behind a firewall.  It hit another work machine at the same time causing both of us to spontaneously reboot (I think Grayhaze was even on IRC when it happened to me and Furan).  Of course, we are getting a virus emailed to us about every 5 seconds, so I have a feeling that we were getting hit from all sides.

Since the first day I had DSL I've had NIS and NAV operating in the background. NIS keeps me in stealth mode and NAV keeps a watch my my email accounts.

Yeah, there have been a few feeble attempts to break through my iron-like force-field, but alas, I have always foiled my would-be attackers.

I laugh at them uncontrolably. Ha Ha!

Maybe the reason I don't get viruses emailed to me is because I don't get email.
