Fences with Nvidia

When are you going to fix this? It's been FUBAR up a long, long, long, long time.

Once again, as happens so often, Nvidia updated its drivers.  Once again all my fences reverted to an old configuration and jumped from my secondary monitor to my primary monitor.  This has been happening for years.  And I get seriously annoyed each and every time.  Seriously, guys, what's it going to take to get you to fix this damn problem?

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

If the driver update is breaking something, why is it that Fences has to be fixed? Is it at all possible that the driver update process is at fault?

That is perhaps the most unhelpful reply I have ever seen from a software support group.  Nvidia video cards are hardly some exotic item used by a few isolated nerds.  They are a very popular, mainstream technology.

And I have seen a number of other posters complaining of the same problem - a problem which never seems to be addressed.

I made my living for 40 years as a software developer, rising as high as vice president of software development in a nationally recognized technology firm.  I know how the industry works.  Your response to my ticket is outrageously unacceptable.  Fences is your product.  I paid for it.  It has a major flaw.  Fix it.

What version of Nvidia driver are you using?

If I had a dollar for every time a graphic driver update screwed my system I'd be rich.  For a VERY long time I have consciously avoided nvidia updates as my system is mission-critical.  In fact, the only time you should update it is if there is a known-fix included to an existing issue with a game you actually use.

The problem with cause and effect is, as a software developer will know, when a conflict is exposed between one component and another it is always difficult to ascertain which is at specific fault.  Now, there are literally millions of users with nVidia drivers/cards, and there are literally millions of users of Fences.

Now, what might be causing issues with a few people [assuming others apart from yourself] is a combination of 'causes' leading to an effect.

What's needed to isolate and replicate the issue is EVERYTHING from winver to nVidia driver ver, card model, screen res, etc. and then perhaps Support can determine which nVidia driver and/or hardware setup causes the issue....;)

Then the fault is mine for not making my point more clear.

As can be seen during an Nvidia's drivers install process, it is somewhat destructive to apps that run in the Windows Explorer process (as it is forcibly shut down) and that Fences being hosed after is not because it is fundamentally flawed.  It would be fair to say, 'yes, the driver update may indeed be wrecking things but Stardock needs to find a way around it - which is different than 'your software is broken'?  We believe we do have such a workaround with 'Snapshots'

What I did not read what you might have done (or not) is to create a manual snapshot just prior to a driver's update then tried to restore it.  If you have not, and even if you have to re-install the same driver version again, please try this.
