Icons Not Staying in Fences

Icons Not Staying in Fences

I am having a problem with icons, specifically documents, not staying in the fence.  They keep digging out!  I put them back, and they dig out again.

Has anybody else experienced this?  I have tried enabling and disabling Quick-hide, but that doesn't work.

I am using Fences 3.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Do I understand correctly from this post that any document files (.doc, .xls, etc) that exist in a fence on the desktop, and which create the temp file when opened (also on the desktop but not in the fence), will then move outside of the fence to the location that the temp file was created when they are closed and saved, and that the only way to fix this is to not have the actual document in the fence but rather a shortcut to the document in there?  This is the problem I am having, but I'd hope there was a better solution to this than that.  Can you confirm if I am understanding this correctly?  I have not had this problem in the past, but now with Windows 10 x 64 bit and the newest version of Fences I am having it.
Thanks

Hello, usually all the temp MS documents files will be delete off once you have save and close it. So that should not be an issue, but if you wish. You can create a fence and set fence rule to send all new documents to that specific fences. Hence all temporary files will also send to that Fence automatically.

Basj,

I understand that the temp files are usually deleted, but the original file often then gets bumped out of the fence to the location where the temp file was.  See reply #12 above in this thread (https://forums.stardock.com/500646/get;3782915) Also see this post from a different thread:  https://forums.stardock.com/497894/get;3785972.  Creating a "rule" would be fine if I only had one fence, but with multiple fences on the desktop I think this solution would just move any file in any of my fences to the fence the rule was created for, wouldn't it.  I don't think this would be much better.

WiredBliss,

I just can't reproduce your issue. On my system the excel and word documents stays in the fences when I open, edit and save it. Maybe there is something special with your system that we need to know to reproduce it. You said "Often" so there is time when it did not move out. What is different? What is the criteria for it to drop off the fence and move to the desktop?  Do your Original file name get change every time you save the documents? Did you set some specific Fences rules to those specific Fences.

Thank you,

Lately I am not aware of any times when it does not get bumped out.  If I have an excel file on my desktop, for example, and put it in a fence, it will always get bumped out when I close and save.  If it is only the shortcut to the excel file (and the excel file is saved elsewhere) it, of course, does not get bumped out.  In the past it seems to have not happened, but it now does.  I feel this may be associated with a windows update or something so that it always happens now whereas a year ago it never happened.  Even turning off the setting to view hidden files does not change the outcome.  Interesting though, this does not happen with text files, but it does happen with Word files or Excel files.

Interesting, I am currently still on Win10 v1909, since v2004 is known to have some issues generally. What version of Windows you have on?

The best method currently to solve this issue 100% of the time is to place MS Office files in a folder (\Documents\someNewFolder for example) and create a Fences Folder portal to them.  They will never be bumped out of them.

Will it not leave some temporary ghost files? I have the Downloads folder as a Fence, but even after the file is downloaded, the Fence shows temporary files that no longer exist, until I manually refresh the Fence.

Nothing is 'left' there.  Folder portals do have a refresh built-in so I would be surprised if you see them long term.

I am on version v1903 build 18362.1016.  My computer does indicate that v2004 is available, but I have not downloaded it.
