Fences 3 VS Win10

Starting from January 2020 it was necessary for me to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Here starts my pain with Fences 3 - I was a satisfied user before...

I found the same problem as described herein

https://forums.stardock.com/490017/icons-falling-out-of-fences-on-windows-10

I can not count how often I purged and re-installed Fences or tried a "clean boot". I get quite disappointed on this ... Especially wired: It looks like that Fences does not work together with Start 10.

I hope there will be a working bug-free Version of Fences (4?) for Windows 10, soon.

Thank you

Thorsten

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. But, I have been using Fences 3 with my Windows 10 since January 2018 without many major issue. Small issues did creep up here and there, especially when Windows 10 did their half cooked updates, which all were solved by Fences update. My current official Windows 10 work perfectly with current Fences version. So I need to know:

1) Windows 10 version. Please use Winver.exe for full Windows 10 version numbers.

2) Fences version.

3) Display setup, monitor/s number, resolution on each and scaling appied on each.

4) More information on your issue Screenshot or video grab will help us understand your issue.

5) What issue do you have between Start10 and Fences. More information on it too.

Thanks

Hi Basj,

thank you for help. As I am  not a professional I try to answer your questions at best.

Obviously it is a matter of resolution: If I set my laptop monitor to the resolution of my second screen (Accer VC 279, 1920 x 1020) it works. ...

Hello

If you have more than one monitor these guides could help you.

Dear Basj,

thank you for replay, but I think your answer relays on a missunderstanding. I am sorry for non-native wrong expression.

It does not work, if I just use the laptop monitor on resolution of 3840 x 2040 with no other monitor connected.

It does work, if I reduce the resolution of the laptop monitor is reduced to 1920 x 1020 regardless, if a second monitor is connect.

So the problem is: Fences 3 can not cope with 3840 x 2040.

Thank you

Thorsten

Hello,

I am running Fences on my 4k 3840 x 2160 without issue and I am sure there are lots of other user running Fences on 4k monitors without issue. Not really sure on 3840x2040 though.

P/s I am wondering why your are running non-standard resolution. Is this default resolution for your notebook/monitor. If so, may I know what is the maker and model of this notebook.

Thank you,

Dear Basj,

the answer to your P/s question is simple: I do want to use fences - and it does not work with with 4K. In order to correct and to clarify:

We are always talking about 4K (3840 x 2160) and its half (1920 x 1080). Any other resolutions named from my side are wrong (e.g. x 1040). Sorry for any confusion I might have caused.

Is there any tip to make Fences 3 run on 4K? Could you see the video?

Best regards

Thorsten

There is no special setting that I know to make it run on 4K, as long as you graphics card can handle it.

It should work without issue. I am running my 4k Monitor using just GTX 1050Ti which is considered entry level graphics card.

BTW, May I know what GPU you are using?

I, still can't get to it.

Btw, looking at your graphics card, you should refer to this Thread where other clients using similar setup as yours, dual graphics cards, and how they resolved their issues. https://forums.stardock.com/490929

Specially on comment#11 and above.

Try it and report  back.

Hi Basj,

thanks for help. No, it does not work. In fact, I found that any monitor output (Laptop or VC279) is handled by internal graphics and not by NVIDIA, see picture (sorry for German). Also, the GeForce 940MX is the default processor and I assigned Fences.exe to use this processor in the settings. But in no case, I can set the laptop display "to the left".

I kindly ask to excuse some personal feelings as this item gets annoying to me: remarks:

I am an 50 year old office user using typical desktop software such as OpenOffice. I do not have any games on my laptop (except an C64 Elite Clone from 1984). Fences imo is a desktop enhancement. It is a 2D application. It should help the user to sort desktops. I do not even think about enabling any 3D effects (such graphical play would disturb my workflow). I am really wondering why such a desktop solution require a high performance GPU???? I mean, it was working on my Windows 7 Laptop with an 8 years old I7-2xxx processor / Intel 3000 GPU seamlessly.

Thank you

Thorsten

Hello,

The issue is not because of Fences need a high end GPU, the reason is that if two gpus working in a same system. There will be tendency to have conflicting between them when doing something graphics. I believe Fences will run just fine on one simple integrate GPU.

Please try the purge and reinstall steps as mentioned here : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling

Just to be sure, redownload latest Fences from your account. Reboot after the purge and reinstall and reboot again. Retest and report back.

We are meanwhile talking about 10-20 "purges & re-installs". Of course this one was not different from the others and it did not solve the problem either. O:)   Maybe one note: The purge-bat end up in a "blue sceen" without any background or task-bar. I am able to bring back running tasks in front by alt ALT-TAB and I could reboot using Task Manager. Also the script report that some keys were not found, but it is too fast to read ...

Is there any option to send a private note ? I have a propsal...

Thank you again,

Hello,

Not really sure I get you. Are you quoting someone who purged not working for them? Or you already done it few times? Please clarify this so we can't go to the next step.

Hi Basj,

the quote is from the top of this thread ... #1 ... thats me :-) ... And yes, purge does not work -

I started this thread after I tried did several purge / re-installations .... it is not that I would ask before read and try out ...

it does allways end up in a kind of blue sceen (not to be confused with the well known "win 3.11 / win 95 blue screen" but all is compeltely blue (or sometimes black). Obviously, system is still running as I can change the task using task-manager, but task bar, windows button and desktop is completely empty without a mouse pointer ....

Please try the following:

-For Win8/10 Users: Open the Start Screen, and type 'cmd'. Right-click on the search result and select 'Run as administrator' from below.

-Type: sfc /scannow

-Wait for the scan to complete (this can take several minutes)

Some help on how this looks should you need it:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system

If the SFC finds errors, but cannot fix them, please also run the following command in the same command prompt window:

dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Some help on how this looks should you need it:

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-dism-command-line-utility-repair-windows-10-image

The above command should assist with replacing any damaged or problematic system files. Please note, however, since it may require restoring certain files, this process can take some time and you will need to be patient until it has completed.

Please let me know whether this resolves your problem or if you have any additional questions.

Thank you,

Hi,

what I did:

run sfc /scannow from a cmd admin console

finished with errors correctd

purged fences (runing purge-bat-script file) run as admin

hung up again in a black screen

rebooted through task manager

checked if all files were removed

run sfc /scannow from a cmd admin console (again)

command closed without errors

reinstalled fences

same problem: Icons fall out of fences / still stuck on the desktop / overlay disappear on a click.

TIA

Thorsten

PS: do not know why you can not see the video - works fine on many computers outside my domain. Maybe it is due to Corona - currently I have a very sluggish internet from home office users overload ... Maybe you can check again by pasting the link into your browser ?

Hello,

Finally I can view the video. Just notice something. What is the size of those icons you set. Can you turn down to Classic size. And I believe you have push up your scaling, can you push it down to 100%, just for test. If it working on 100%, move it up to 125%, retest and move up again until you see the issue again.

Thank you,

Dear Basj

That's it. You found the influencing root cause. I selected a compromise of icon size and scale based on my screen resolution (3840 x 2160, medium icons and 200 %). Thank you so much.

Anyway, may I ask you for a favor:

It's a compromise, and I am quite glad that it is working at least. But I am 50 years old wearing decrepit caused glasses B) . I personally think that machines should be adopted to humans, not vice versa. With my new laptop, resolution changed from 1920 x 1080 to 3840 x 2160 while the monitor attached to the docking station is still 1920 x 1080. I am used to "my regular sized icons and font size". I would like to have 250 % as before. 250 % is also the recommended size. This size is meaningful as a doubling the resolution from 1920 x 1080 to 3840 x 2160 results in a factor 4 x smaller icons. This would be compensated by exactly 250 %.

Therefore, I do not like the compromise and, honestly, as Fences is a desktop solution I expect it to work with different icon types and scales.  Can you please report this to Fences development so solve / compensate in Version 4, please?

Thank you so much for your work and all effort you put on my to help me find a solution.

Regards

Thorsten
