Folders browsing/navigation in folder portals works not

Hello!

Yesterday I reinstalled Windows 10.1909 x64 Pro and this evening installed new Fences 3.0.9.11.

I imported old snapshot and restored it. First problem was incorrect monitor (I'm using 4 desktops) identification - problem was in monitor number, coordinates were correct in config file.I think this can be fixed in future versions. After correction I was satisfied.

Problem began in folder portals. Since I own Fences it was great browsing folders without opening Explorer or other file manager - simply in Fences folder portals.

Now I have "flat" folder portals which after double clicking on folder icon only opens Explorer.

Maybe it is in import from old installation. Really don't know how to fix it, but if it will remain Fences will be not so great solution.

Can anybody help me how to fix it?

Thank you for each help, reply or suggestion.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues.

Now I have "flat" folder portals which after double clicking on folder icon only opens Explorer.

Please enable/tick "Allow navigation" : Click on that 3 bar menu on that portal fence.

Please try the purge and reinstall steps as mentioned here : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling

Just make sure to re-download the latest version from your account. Reboot after the purge. Reinstall that version and reboot. Retest and report back here.

to be honest I've never been able to do click through folder navigation with Fences. I brought this up with another user and support just asked us to re-install fences. When that didn't work they pretty much said it was a conflict with another software and that was it. I think they recommended us to do a clean install of Windows - but that's not going to happen by choice.

If you managed to solve it please provide us with your steps!

Thanks!

Now I did it.

Really works not. Even I found other problem - before reinstall I had problem with Ctrl-X/C/V (cut/copy/paste shortcuts).
After uninstalling Fences shortcut problem was solved. After Fences new installation - again shortcut working not!

So, there must be any software conflict.

I have this software installed (clean installation is few days ago):
Java
VM for Java
Edge
Edge Dev
Tiles
Mailbird
Visual Studio 6 with ThunderVB
Visual Basic 3
NTVDMx64
WineVDM
SoundFX (for NTVDM and WineVDM)
Free eXPert PDF Reader
Soft Organizer
StarWind V2V Image Converter
OSFMount
Office 365

Shell Extensions and managing software which can be problem:
Fences
Actual Window Manager
KbdEdit Personal
Winstep Xtreme
8GadgetPack
Logitech G HUB
AutoHotKey
TC4Shell

All were installed in old Windows installation except Actual Window Manager and Office 365.
I see that AWM manages whole desktop with multi monitor support, but I believe it is not problem - it is powerful software
If anyone knows what in this software list can be problem and what to turn off/different to set, please help me.
I want to have Fences and AWM - and I found that clipboard shortcuts problem were Fences also in old installation, where I didn't knew what it does.

Or need I older Fences version - I installed new one - and if, which?
I have old installation of Windows in disk image and can to use it in virtual machine if it helps.

Thank you for all what you're doing for me.

De-facto it needs not new account.
It needs only to configure options in boot what is easy to do, so please confirm this reply if is it enough.
It is also easy to give booting again back, simply by config without new account.

Well, from what I understand it need a new account, its a clean slate situation. If it not a clean new account, it won't be enough for "Cleanboot".

Ok.

But before I do it, I must to say that I installed Fences 3.0.5.12 which were downloaded at buying.

Browsing folders works not, but I see that one problem is solved - clipboard shortcuts are working. It looks that's any problem of newer version and maybe compatibility problem too.

Or?

So, I did it and Fences are working perfectly.

Only one Q: is enough adding startup items one by one and watching what it does? Or it needs also boot config modifying one by one and always reboot?

Thank you for helping me.

From from Microsoft Support : "If your problem does not occur while the computer is in a clean boot environment, then you can determine which startup application or service is causing the problem by systematically turning them on or off and restarting the computer.  While turning on a single service or startup item and rebooting each time will eventually find the problematic service or application, the most efficient way to do this is to test half of them at a time, thus eliminating half of the items as the potential cause with each reboot of the computer.  You can then repeat this process until you've isolated the problem."

I did it - enabling services and after enabling all of them it works. Then I enabled all startup items and it works.
So, I returned to my account and disabled all non Microsoft services and startup items except Fences - works not.

So, I think anything is starting by Task Scheduler.

So, can it be anything other? I'm crazy for it.

Any idea?

So, finished - Task Scheduler cleaned, but no result.

Here my knowledge is on end.

Have anybody idea?

Hello,

Don't really understand what you mean. Was the issue solved? Did the issue came back?

I forgot to write what I did.

New account has working Fences browsing - even after enabling all services and startup items, so it looks like no problem anyway.

I returned to my normal account and disabled all services incl. Task Scheduler items and Fences browsing works not.
So, what to do? Really don't know where is problem.

It possible you have a corrupted user account and you can use below guide to help solve it.

Please try the following:

-For Win8/10 Users: Open the Start Screen, and type 'cmd'. Right-click on the search result and select 'Run as administrator' from below.

-For 7 Users: click Start, in the start search field type 'cmd'. Right-click on the search result and select 'Run as administrator'.

-Type: sfc /scannow

-Wait for the scan to complete (this can take several minutes)

Some help on how this looks should you need it:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system

If the SFC finds errors, but cannot fix them, please also run the following command in the same command prompt window:

dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Some help on how this looks should you need it:

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-dism-command-line-utility-repair-windows-10-image

The above command should assist with replacing any damaged or problematic system files. Please note, however, since it may require restoring certain files, this process can take some time and you will need to be patient until it has completed.

Please let me know whether this resolves your problem or if you have any additional questions.

I did test, result was no error.
Then no matter of result I started repair, success.

Nothing helped, so I did else one time reinstall by purge Fences.

Always - folder portals browsing is not possible.
And even - I installed newest Fences version and again found problem with clipboard shortcuts in Explorer...
When I had older version (3.0.5.12) clipboard shortcuts in Explorer were working.

What else is possible to do?

Hello,

From your previous report, on the new account, cleanboot, it work without issue? If so, that shows that its nothing to do with Fences itself. It shows, somehow, your original account, not working with Fences. My personal views, is either use the new account, or, do a fresh reinstall of Windows 10.

Ok, I use created account and will adding item by item from original account to see if problem appears again.
So, if, I will see what it does.

Of course I'll report it all.

So, I added Gadgets, Winstep Xtreme, Mailbird and Actual Window Manager.

Again - the same situation - not working Fences + Clipboard shortcuts.

So, I uninstalled Actual Window Manager totally 'cause other added entries were no problem in previous installation, AWM is only one new software.

But helped not.

Now I have both accounts with no working Fences.

Is possible only single option Clean Windows fo factory defaults?

I do think from the function of Actual Window Manager, it is high probability the conflicting program with Fences. You can try the purge and reinstall steps again for fences and see if it help. If not it still either another new account or new clean Windows install.

Adding screenshots for the 3 important steps for folder portal menu "Allow navigation"Hoping to save someone else a few hours of frustration. <3   I purged and reinstalled 3 times (totally unnecessary) before I finally realized I missed a step. I was confused & treated these 2 settings as one, but they are actually 2 separate settings within the folder options: "Open each folder in the same window" & "Launch folder windows in a separate process". All 3 settings in screenshots below need to be verified.

from hamburger menu on folder portal title — select/check "Allow navigation"

 Allow Navigation in Folder Portal

under folder options "General" tab â€” select/check "Open each folder in the same window" & click Apply

Open each folder in the same window

under folder options "View" tab â€” unselect/uncheck "Launch folder windows in a separate process" & click Apply

Launch folder windows in a separate process

THAAAAANNNKKKK YOOOOOU!

I had always open in the same window, BUT:

I unchecked launch folders in separated processes and it works generally - you helped me generally!

Now it is solved.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I must now only wait to Windows 10.2004 to reinstall and I'm sure that here's still choice!
