Graphics missing on Start10 Menu after Win10 1903 update

Hi, recently when i updated my Alienware 17R4 laptop to Win10 1903, after the update, i found out that on Start10, with the classic menu, i am missing icons... like this:

It is displaying a number instead of the icon.

I tried re-installing, flushing the cache (the purge procedure i found in the forums) and nothing resolved this.

It is only a cosmetic problem, 100% usable, but would like to get this fixed...

Any idea what could be the cause? I do not think it is directly related to Start10... but it`s the only software that seems to be showing this, so i think that Start10 might be using some icon library from Windows, and one of those might be corrupted or missing a file...

Any help?

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues.

Please try the following:

-For Win8/10 Users: Open the Start Screen, and type 'cmd'. Right-click on the search result and select 'Run as administrator' from below.

-Type: sfc /scannow

-Wait for the scan to complete (this can take several minutes)

Some help on how this looks should you need it:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system

If the SFC finds errors, but cannot fix them, please also run the following command in the same command prompt window:

dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Some help on how this looks should you need it:

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-dism-command-line-utility-repair-windows-10-image

The above command should assist with replacing any damaged or problematic system files. Please note, however, since it may require restoring certain files, this process can take some time and you will need to be patient until it has completed.

Please let me know whether this resolves your problem or if you have any additional questions.

Thank you,

Well, not too sure about Microsoft compatibility issue, since both my system, one on Official latest Win10 1903 Build 18362.418 and another on Evaluation copy Build 18990.vb-release.190921-1704. Both run perfectly with Start10.

Would like to suggest, Cleanboot steps mentioned here : https://forums.stardock.com/486022/start10-support-faq#cleanboot

Try it and report back

Those come from a font so it looks like the Marlett font on your system has become missing or corrupt.

On one of my many systems, it doesn't work... so i checked the working systems, and they don't have the Marlett font either... so you might have a good point about a missing or corrupt font, but not the Marlett one, because my other working systems with Start10 at same version do not have the Marlett font either, and they show all the graphics details...

Could it be a font?

I just tired the new account solution and it did not work. Also tried clean boot, didnt work.

I then did a complete uninstall of Start10 with Uninstall Tool (that also cleans out all registry of the program and remaining folders deep in APPData folder)

After reinstall and reboot, it now works properly again.

Great, glad you get it working again. Was confusing your comment with the TS, since TS already mentioned he already did the purge steps.

The Marlett font is used for those.

As it is an older OS font that's not used for normal text display (just UI elements) it does not appear when you search fonts, but if you run charmap.exe you should be able to see it in the drop down on the working machines.

I can see the font using charmap on the good and wrong system... they all are alike...

Just don't know why it doesn't show...

I also tried to reset the font folder, with a working system, did the Marlett font replacement, with original Windows 10 font folder, and same thing...

There is something else... but what could it be?

Has there been any new development on this problem. I have the same symptoms on one of my system but not the others. The marlett font is present and the same version on all of them. I have tried to clean out the Start10 install and reinstalled it without any change. I have also tested 'sfc /scannow' which reports no problems.

I found out it was a beta feature of Windows 10 that was causing this problem...

I had to head to Settings, then Time & Language, then in related settings Date, Time & Regional formatting then also in related settings the Additional Date, Time & Regional formatting which will open the Control Panel and display Clock and Region which i would select Region then in the Region window, click on the Administrative tab and in the Language for non-Unicode programs, click on Change System Locale and then uncheck the Beta: Use unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support.

Once i did remove the check from there, "Ok'ed" out of every window, and restart the computer, it would be fine again...

This is how i fixed mine.

Thank you for the report.

We will investigate what that setting is breaking and see if we can workaround it.
