New icons being placed behind fences

For ages I have been having issue with new icons being placed behind fences. Finally pushed myself to post about this. Here's an example https://i.imgur.com/Qk5v5bC.png

I used to have 2 and then 3 and now 5 display setup. As far as I can remember it has been happening in all cases. Current Fences version (latest) is 3.0.9.11 used on Windows 10 Pro v1903, build 18362.295.

Any idea how to fix this?

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. The easiest way to do it is to create a Temporary/Bucket Fence and set Fences Rule for that fence. Set it so that all new icons/program to go that Fence.

Ok. That's a workaround. But why is this happening? Fences app is aware of icons and fences locations, why not just place icon in open space on main screen?

Concerning this issue; i am not able to configure the "set Fences Rule for a fence." as i am not able to choose a fence (as "as new icons as the first icon  in the targeted fence" is greyed)

How to solve?

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. But not really sure on "(as "as new icons as the first icon in the targeted fence" is greyed)". Please post a screenshot on it.

If you have the fence in the upper left corner, that is where Windows puts icons by default.  So this is normal, IF that is the case.  Basj's workaround is the way to go.

I do have fence in upper left corner. But why is this not being fixed? Fences knows about location of fences and and icons. Why not adjust location of those new icons so that they are not behind fences?

It's a Microsoft thing.  I dunno, maybe Stardock can't change that. Some stuff is hard coded by MS.

Icons showing up behind a Fence only happens with a roll up Fence:

And it not unexpected behavior.

Non-roll-up, it should work as such:

If you are seeing it for non-rollup frences, please try a purge and reinstall:

I have non-rollup fences. I don't think I have seen this issue with files created via "New" context menu. I think it's always been with newly installed program shortcuts.

To test with newly crated files I wanted to disable previously configured rules that all new icons go to predefined fences. I disabled it, but they still ended up in that fence. Tried disabling/enabling Fences, still the same. The removed that fences and was able to test with files from "New" context menu. Didn't see the issue, files were places where I had opened the menu.

So, it appears there's also an issue with applying the "new icons" rule change to fences.

I now tried to install Opera Browser to see where icon gets placed. It ended up at intersection of 4 displays. Here's screenshot https://i.imgur.com/Tqcp1ZM.jpg

Not behind fences, but in seemingly random location.

I've been using Fences for at least a decade. Up until recently (I think it was when I finally went to Windows 10 20H2, I skipped 2004 and maybe 1909) desktop icons ALWAYS wrapped around a fence. New or existing. As soon as a program installed, the icon popped up to the right of the upper left fence and scooted everything else over, never under a fence and invisible which is definitely the case now.

Any time you dragged a fence to a different location, the icons on the desktop always moved out from under them, but that doesn't work anymore either. I know MSFT created the problem, but it would be awesome to see it working again if possible.

Wondering if there's any update to this issue.  After decades of a cluttered desktop, I finally installed Fences (still on trial), and having icons not move around fences is definitely a frustrating behavior.

I certainly do not see the behavior from this video listed earlier on the thread years ago:

https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/2019-09-20_16-41-30.mp4

Instead the icon is obscured by the fence when the fence is moved.

This is on 2 of my computers, running Windows 7 Pro (Version 6.1 Build 7601: Service Pack 1) and Windows 10 (Version 20H2, Build 19042.1348).

On the Win 7 computer, I have multiple monitors.  On the Win10 computer, it is a single monitor.  So I do not think a multiple monitors desktop is causing the issue.

Also, whenever a new file is downloaded and created on the desktop, it takes the spot in the 2nd row, 1st column, and shoves any icons that were there to the right.  Normal Windows behavior is to put the new icon in the first column, first open spot down.
